In this article, the author describes all about Coke Technology. He discusses everything about waste heat recovery process
Coke Technology is a kind of fuel used for smelting iron ore with the help of a blast furnace. This technology is meant for lessening the quantity of iron oxide (haematite) and reducing those primary constituents which are held responsible for producing smoke. The whole process helps in producing a smoke-free fuel. For example, the kind of smokeless fuel used for domestic use in the smokeless zones of United Kingdom is produced with the help of a similar technology. Hereafter different coke by-products can be derived with the help of mixing carbon monoxide and hydrogen.
This process of Coke Technology also helps in the formation of water gas by combining carbon monoxide, hydrogen respectively and passing steam on red-hot coke. Other gases like producer gas, wood gas, generator gas, synthetic gas, suction gas are produced by flowing air into red-hot coke. Coke Technology can be derived by mixing gases like carbon monoxide, hydrogen and nitrogen. The more the quantity and volatility of coal, the greater would be the number of by-products. This can be produced only through the process of coal carbonization and various other coke technologies.
In such Coke Technology, there are about 26-29 percent volatile constituents necessary for blending and mixing coal for the sake of coking in the coke oven. It can later be used as raw material for guarding against heat on NASA’s Apollo program involving space vehicles. This is again referred to as AVCOAT 5026-39 in the last stage and can be used for the purpose of shielding against heat in the vehicle named Mars Pathfinder. Coke is not used on a regular basis in the modern times and in space shuttle programs regulated by NASA. It is necessary for planning and using it as a heat protection shield for future generation advanced space craft Orion.
Waste heat recovery on the other hand is a process through which fuel combustion and chemical reaction is reused for getting useful benefits for various purposes. The measurement of the heat amount produced is dependent on its “value.” In the terms of economics, this step is mainly taken to recover the heat. This is again dependent on the amount rather than the waste heat gas generated. This method can actually provide a solution in saving a great deal of fuel. The majority portion of such gas gets lost midway in the process which can hardly be recovered.
Waste heat can be derived in all temperatures including that of cold chilling water or the waste gases which come out of high temperature industrial furnace, kiln or others. This process of waste heat recovery enables the emission of waste gases which can later be recycled for beneficial use. Heating combustion air, space heating, pre-heated boiler can be cited as some of the examples of waste heat recovery. It helps in recovering the maximum heat amount of great potential. This temperature is only applicable for high temperature and for the purpose of pre-heating.
