Many people are afraid to drink coffee because it is considered to be quite dangerous for the heart. But a new study has found that people who drink more coffee on a daily basis are more likely to have a healthy heart.

The results of the study were presented in San Francisco at the American Heart Associations 50th Annual Conference on Cardiovascular Disease Epidemiology and Prevention on March 5, 2010

For the study, researchers, led by Dr Arthur Klatsky of US pharmaceutical giant Kaiser Permanente, examined health records of more than 130,000 men and women who entered a health study in the 1970s and 1980s. The subjects ranged in age from 18 to 90; participants underwent a physical exam and reported their lifestyle habits upon enrollment.

Scientists, led by Dr. Arthur Klatsky, a senior consultant in cardiology at Kaiser Permanente Division of Research in Oakland, Calif found that those who drank four cups or more of coffee daily had an 18 percent lower risk of being hospitalized for irregular heartbeats and other heart- rhythm conditions than people who did not drink coffee. Tea consumption did not have a similar effect.

The results of the study showed that people who drank four cups or more of coffee daily had an 18 percent lower risk of being hospitalized for irregular heartbeats and other heart- rhythm conditions than people who did not drink coffee.

Moreover, it was also proved that individuals who reported drinking one to three cups each day had a 7 percent reduction in risk compared to those who refrained from drinking coffee.

"Coffee drinking is related to lower risk of hospitalization for rhythm problems, but the association does not prove cause and effect, or that coffee has a protective effect," Klasky said.

Dr. Klatsky added "These data should be reassuring to people who drink moderate amounts of coffee that their habit is not likely to cause a rhythm disturbance."

This study does not mean that people should drink coffee to prevent rhythm problems," Klatsky said. "It supports the idea that people who are at risk for rhythm problems or who have rhythm problems do not need to abstain from coffee."

A health observer disagreed. He suggested that some non-coffee drinkers avoid coffee because of their heart conditions, which may be negatively impacted by drinking coffee, meaning that overall coffee drinkers may be more likely to be heart healthy compared to non-drinkers in the first place.

However,if you are the moderate drinker - a few cups a day - coffee is a safe beverage that may even offer some health benefits. but taking it in excess will certainly lead to some health complications. So just avoid excessive intake of Caffeine and enjoy its health benefits by taking it in moderate amount. And remember your health is in your hands.
