In this article, the author describes all about Coal & Coke. He discusses the various uses, benefits and functionality.
Coal & Coke both are carbon components and are extensively used in our day to day lives. Coke is formed from a solid carbon based material which is later derived through the process of destructive distillation of low-ash, sulfur and bituminous coal. Coal is usually grey in color and is a hard substance. It is porous in nature. This can be formed naturally or the one which is commonly used and found is man-made. The first instance of coke can be traced back to the ninth century AD, when it was first used by the Chinese.
It was the Chinese laborers in the Yellow River valley who first used coke as a fuel for their furnace in an area where there is dearth of trees. Coke is usually produced by human intervention by taking out the volatile elements present in coal which includes water, coal-gas and coal-tar. This is done through the process of baking in an air free furnace or oven at a maximum temperature of 2,000 degree Celsius which counts upto 3632 degrees. This is mainly done to fix together carbon and residual ash, though it is hard to find Coal & Coke in the natural form.
In the recent times, we can often find “by-product” coking ovens. The hydrocarbons in the volatile form are used to generate energy in a separate combustion process. The hydrocarbon gases are later burnt with the help of non by-product coke furnace which is further used as a help in the whole process of carbonization. Those coals in the bituminous form are again used for coking coal through different techniques. Both Coal & Coke can be found and formed naturally.
Coal & Coke are used as a fuel form and for other industrial purpose. Coke is formed naturally when coal seam comes into intersection through volcanic eruption. This eruption can generate heat in the surrounding coal present in the anoxic atmosphere where coke is produced around the area of eruption or intrusion. This coke can again be used for a few thermal purposes as a thermal product to be coked again, though it might have already lost its volatility.
Coal & Coke both are useful products in terms of utility. When it comes to coal, it is an essential ingredient to be used as a fuel for combustion purpose. Coal is usually found in the sedimentary rock layer or strata better known as coal beds or coal seams. The color of coal can range from black or brownish black. Those forms of coal which are hard in nature are referred to as anthracite coal or metamorphic rock or coal. Coal is usually composed of the basic elements like hydrogen, sulfur, oxygen and nitrogen.
