Cloud computing has been discussed quite a lot over the last 3 years or so. Some technology enthusiasts have taken to it like fish to water, while others are still skeptical about it. But have you ever wondered what goes into the making of cloud computing? What is the cloud computing architecture that enables a user to access his applications on the web?
Cloud computing has been discussed quite a lot over the last 3 years or so. Some technology enthusiasts have taken to it like fish to water, while others are still skeptical about it. But have you ever wondered what goes into the making of cloud computing? What is the cloud computing architecture that enables a user to access his applications on the web?

Here is a quick and simple look at the working of cloud computing and the basic architecture that goes into its making. To start with, you must understand that cloud hosting is divided into two parts- the front end i.e. the user-end and the back-end i.e. the part where the applications work. The front end is comprised of the user’s computer and an application or a set of applications which enables the user to access his data, applications etc. which are hosted on the cloud.
In layman terms, when a website is hosted on the cloud, a simple software is given to the web developer which he can access from a computer in his home and office and make changes to his website as he wishes. The backend comprises of servers and data centers where the applications are hosted. Thus, the backend of cloud computing architecture is the place where the applications or IT infrastructure is hosted and managed by professionals 24/7.

Depending on the package chosen for cloud computing, there could be separate servers for separate applications or different applications could be stored on the same server. Next in line in the cloud computing architecture is the central server. It is the role of the central server to monitor traffic and ensure that applications run smoothly. This is done with the help of protocols and software known as middleware.

Middleware, as the name suggests, is the connection between network computers to help them communicate with each other. There is also something known as server virtualization in cloud computing architecture. Through this mechanism, multiple virtual servers are made out of one physical server to save on having multiple storage devices.

Server virtualization is achieved by having separate operating systems for each part of one physical server, thus “fooling” it into believing it is actually a set of multiple servers. The above forms the basis of cloud computing architecture. A basic understanding of the architecture of cloud computing helps you decipher how the cloud works which is beneficial is taking right business decisions.
