Even if you do not feel like cleaning your skirting boards, it is a chore that you must get done. Dirty skirting boards are just as glaring as the artwork or decorative pieces that you hang on your walls.

If the truth is to be told, no one really likes cleaning skirting boards. The simple reason for it is that MDF skirting boards are just terribly hard to clean. Because they are on kissing terms with the floor, they collect dust and grime so easily, not to mention the hair we shed. It can get worse if we have pets in the house.
Still, it is an absolute must to keep baseboards clean. The mouldings on your wall, whether it is the baseboard, the crown or the wainscoting, are the crowning glories of your wall. If you think that no one will notice just how dirty your baseboards are simply because you believe that no one really looks at the floor, think again. Dirty skirting boards are just as noticeable as any expensive art hanging on the wall.
So, whether you like it or not, you need to keep your baseboards clean. It is a part of your house and it speaks a lot about you if a part of your house looks visibly dirty.
There Is No Shortcut to Cleaning Skirting Boards
The frustrating part about cleaning skirting boards is that there is no shortcut to it. If you want to clean your baseboards, you have to clean it the old-fashioned way, which is to apply a rag to it and scrub with all your might. It is back-breaking labour, one that will literally get you crawling all over the house on your hands and knees, but it absolutely must be done. But if you do it regularly, it would not be so difficult at all.
But you can make this chore a bit easier. The simplest way to clean baseboards is to mix soap in warm water, dip a cleaning rag in the solution and then wipe at the surface of the baseboard. Warm water is more effective at softening deep-seated dirt and adds to the cleaning power of your detergent.
Cleaning Stubborn Dirt on Skirting Boards
Of course you may ask, "What if the dirt is too stubborn for just warm water and soap?" Do not worry if the dirt would not come off your MDF skirting boards no matter how hard you scrub it. There are a number of home remedies that you can apply to your baseboards to get the stubborn dirt off them.
One such homemade remedy is adding vinegar to your soap-and-water solution. Vinegar is a mild acid that can break down stubborn dirt. It is readily available in your kitchen and if not, you can easily buy it from the supermarket. You can also try baking soda if you do not like the smell of vinegar. If you prefer more commercial solutions, you can try applying wood polish to your baseboards to remove the dirt and the scruff. Mild bleach will also work.
When you are cleaning your MDF skirting boards, make sure that you use rags. If you prefer to use brushes, make sure that the bristles are not abrasive so you would not leave scratch marks on your MDF skirting boards. Also, when you clean, take care to remove your jewellery and wear gloves if you do not want to make your skin feel rough and dry.
