When Gene Hunt said he wanted to spend his retirement "sizzling in the sun like a sausage" in Alicante he was expressing the holiday hopes of whole generation. And although the Costa Blanca is chock-a-block with sizzling Brits to this day, many more of them are tailoring their trip towards exploring Spain's dynamo; its 'city of lights.'

When Gene Hunt said he wanted to spend his retirement "sizzling in the sun like a sausage" in Alicante he was expressing the holiday hopes of whole generation. And although the Costa Blanca is chock-a-block with sizzling Brits to this day, many more of them are tailoring their trip towards exploring Spain's dynamo; its 'city of lights.' In this overview I'll run through some of the main sights; some of the best places to eat and drink and finally suggest a great and unusual excursion.
The Inglesia de Santa Maria Church was built in the later middle ages on top of a Moorish mosque. The church interior is a treasure trove of art and sculpture. The Catedral de San Nicolas de Bari is another beautiful church, its high blue dome is an obvious landmark. The communion chapel is a masterful piece of ecclesiastical architecture and is well known in Spain. Anybody staying in Alicante hotels has all of this on their doorstep!
The Santa Cruz district is located up the hill above the cathedral. The area offers great views over the city and is in itself very charming. The Santa Cruzchapel is actually built into the old city wall here. Having climbed one hill, why not climb another and visit Lucentum? The settlement has only been partially excavated yet remnants of the walls and the bathhouses give an insight into the ordered pace of Roman civic life.
There is no reason not to eat well in Alicante. The Spanish take their food seriously and every palette is well catered for. Fried fish and beer can be had at El Pescadora Cerveceria and Freiduria along with other specialities fresh off the grill. The calamari is a treat! Alicante holidays would not be complete with experiencing culinary life from a local point of view. La Rambla in the city centre is popular with locals (always a good sign) and the place has a great ambiance. The menu of restaurant Calle Mayor is authentically Spanish and a good bet for tapas and other regional specialities. Calle Bailen is a Mexican place that does a good value breakfast for as little as 2 Euro.
A visit to the tiny island of Tabarca makes an exciting excursion from Alicante. A ferry departs regularly from the city harbour to Tabarca village on the island, which is itself tiny, less than a mile long. The island is a nature reserve and a popular place for snorkellers to check out the Mediterranean sea life. And if that sounds too active, there's always a beach!
