It gets darker earlier each day, the nights are getting colder, and leaves have already begun to fall. A change in the seasons always causes a change in my tastes. The summer is all about mild cigars and light ales but fall and winter are filled with heavier cigars and dark lagers or stouts. To fully enjoy both cigars and beer, I believe that they must be experienced together. Separately they may be sufficient, but for complete satiety always be on the look-out for the right mix.

Remember that there is no right or wrong here. If you like pairing full-bodied cigars with lighter beers who am I to say you can’t enjoy them together? Otherwise, those who like only light beers and only full-bodied cigars would never be “allowed” to experience the joy of cigar and beer pairing!
Try combining beers and cigars that have similar taste profiles or flavors. Above all, go with your gut—or should I say mouth?
Formed by entirely my own opinions, here is a list with some of my favorite cold weather cigar-beer combos.
Sam Adams: Double Bock – deep red/crimson in color. With a tasty mix of caramel, spices, and fruit this would be perfect for cold nights or with a heavy meal. Just make sure you take note of the alcohol content—at 9.5% this one packs quite a punch!
-->Cigar match: Excalibur 1066, CAO Italia, Cu-Avana Intenso.
Sierra Nevada: Tumbler Autumn Brown Ale – like the Double Bock just mentioned this one is deliciously spicy with hints of wood, which makes this a good beer for both stout- and brown ale-lovers alike. Not as sweet as the others, but hefty, it’s mostly on the list for being unique.
-->Cigar match: Rocky Patel Sun Grown, CAO Brazilia, H. Upmann Churchill.
Dogfish Head: Raison D’Etre – dark brown ale. Brewed with raisins, sugar, and Belgian-style yeast. I love brown ales, so I knew I would like this one when a friend brought some over for a Monday night football game. It’s sweet, but versatile; should fit most drinkers’ palates.
-->Cigar match: Cohiba Black, Rocky Patel Sun Grown, CAO Brazilia.
Sam Adams: Octoberfest – mahogany color; notes of cinnamon and caramel with a dessert-like flavor. The color and look of the beer make this very attractive when poured into a nice tall glass. Yes it is popular, but certainly not a sell-out when it comes to taste!
-->Cigar match: Padilla Miami, AVO #9, Man O’War Ruination.
Smuttynose: Old Brown Dog Ale – a medium bodied beer with a fantastic mix of sweet and bitter. I was wary of the malt flavor (and it’s quite prominent!) but this is certainly a delicious brew. It’s your classic nutty brown ale.
-->Cigar match: Padilla Series ’68, Oliva Serie O, Carlos Torano 1916.
Magic Hat: Howl – a full-bodied black lager with caramel and coffee flavors that really make this one crisp, but like some black lagers it’s not over-the-top on heaviness. I highly recommend this beer as it is chock-full of fun, pleasant flavors.
-->Cigar match: Padilla Signature 1932, Partagas Black, Indian Tabac Super Fuerte Toro Maduro.
When it’s cold outside, I can’t think of anything more fulfilling than stretching out on a comfy couch or lounge chair to enjoy a well-composed beer and a premium cigar. Sit back, call up some friends, have a little party, and choose your stogie. Then all you have to do is relax in front of the fireplace—the perfect way to delve into hibernation-mode!
