When you browse the oral care aisle to purchase a new toothbrush, you are more than likely to be overwhelmed by the selection. There are so many choices to factor into your purchasing decision. Electric or Manual? Hard or Soft bristled? Inexpensive or Costly?Because every mouth is different, there’s no correct toothbrush for everyone. To begin with, there are several important factors to consider when deciding which toothbrush is the best one for you to purchase: Always choose a soft bristled tooth brush. All dental professionals recommend soft bristled brushes. So why are hard bristled brushes offered for sale, by reputable companies? The answer is, because people buy them. There will always be people who prefer these to soft bristled brushes, because they feel that soft bristles do not in fact clean their teeth. However, hard bristled brushes can actually contribute to severe gum recession and abrasion of the tooth enamel, resulting in sensitivity and aesthetic changes in your smile. Soft bristled brushes are the only way to safely (and effectively) clean around your teeth and gum lines.Choose a toothbrush that is appropriately sized for your mouth. If you have a smaller mouth, you may want to use a youth sized toothbrush in order to effectively reach hard to clean areas. Likewise, don’t purchase larger brushes for children…they will not be able to have enough room to utilize the head of the toothbrush on their small teeth.Do you prefer an electric or a manual toothbrush? Studies show that electric toothbrushes remove much more plaque and bacteria from the teeth and gums than manual brushes do. If you are prone to having uncontrolled gingivitis (swollen, bleeding gums) or gum disease, your dental professional will most likely recommend that you use an electric toothbrush. Because they are much more efficient, they take less effort to use and the results are much better than those when you use a manual toothbrush. When pricing toothbrushes, remember that we usually get what we pay for. Cheaply made toothbrush bristles may actually only have microscopic differences compared to name brands, but those differences can affect your gum health. High quality toothbrush bristles are rounded over the ends, being gentle on the teeth. Some cheaper toothbrush bristles may actually only be cut, resulting in sharp angles at the end of each bristle, making a more abrasive toothbrush that can damage gum and tooth tissue.
