Pool filters as it name suggests is the main tool to keep the swimming pool clean and away from the different kinds of debris that is brought about by the wind, rain, toys, cleaning supplies and swimmers. It is very useful in keeping the water crystal clear and it also advances the health and safety of the swimmers. Choosing the right pool filter can be very crucial since a simple mistake can largely affect the entire performance of the swimming pool.

Basically, there are three main kinds of the pool filters, the cartridge, the diatomaceous earth and the sand. All of these will serve as a good filtering device for your pool; however it is best to know which will be appropriate for your pool.

Sand filters can be considered as the most common kind of filter. They are simple filters that make use of a bed of sand. It works by pumping in the swimming pool water through the layer of sand, therefore removing all the impurities and other dirt from the water. The dirty water goes in one side of the pool to the other side of the filters where it comes out cleaned.

However, after some time, the filter gets obstructed by the impurities, and you have to wash it to remove the debris. Essentially, this has to be done every couple of weeks or when ever you feel it’s necessary.

The cartridge filters is probably the easiest and most convenient type of pool filter. They work in the same way as the filters in your car. The water passes through the filter material leaving all the unnecessary debris on the material, them the water is pushed back to the pool.

Cartridges must at least be cleaned after a couple of weeks. It is advised that you save at least a pair of filter material so that you can make use of the other cartridge while the other one is being cleaned.

The Diatomaceous Earth or the De filter is considered the most efficient of the three pool filters. DE filters are made up of tiny diatoms that can filter up to 5 microns from the water. Because of this they are able to clean more effectively.

Like the sand filter, a DE filter needs to be backwashed every after a couple of weeks when the pressure has already risen in the filter. It needs to be washed as much as necessary to maintain the good performance of the filter.
