There are many factors to consider when choosing a radiology school, and with an important decision that will so drastically affect your future career you must carefully deliberate on all your options. The first decision you must make is whether to attend school locally or in another city or state, or even online. That is just the beginning, though.
If you are itching to move elsewhere to get your education you are sure to find many great schools in vibrant cities, but the cost factor may limit you, as out-of-state tuition can be as much as three times the cost of in-state tuition. Establishing residency can take as long as a year and requires filing paperwork on time, after which you can begin paying the in-state rate. If you need to stay local there should be good schools, so don’t worry, and even if you have to continue working and/or taking care of a family full time there are options for you as well. Online colleges and vocational schools that offer night classes are two excellent routes.
Once you have these matters figured out, then you must make sure that the schools you are considering are accredited, whether they are local, out-of-state or online. Only accredited schools will qualify you to sit for the certification exam that is required for radiology jobs. The Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology can provide information about which schools are accredited.
With a list of accredited schools that fit your criteria in mind, you can further narrow your options by contacting the schools and researching them online. Find out what kind of jobs you will be eligible for after graduation, what type of class schedules they offer, what the average tuition costs are, when classes start throughout the year, what type of hands-on practice they offer, whether their credits transfer, and what kind of job placement services they offer, if any.
It may sound like a lot of work to choose a radiology school, but the school you choose may determine the job you get once you graduate. It’s an important decision.
