This article uses the testimonial format to encourage students to carry out in-depth self-assessment, in order to select the right major in college and chart an ideal career path. The author gives some tips that high school grads can use to find out their specific interests and career ambitions and wisely select their major, through the personal experience of a college graduate.
Making the transition from high school to college is not only intimidating but also full of confusion. Most of us are in a state of panic, uncertain of our major, let alone the career. We know we are going to attend a school of business but are unable to decide whether to major in marketing or any other area of management.

On the one hand, we are excited to think that our lives are going to change forever as soon as we enter the college. And on the other hand, we find ourselves struggling to know exactly our major and career ambitions.

And guess what? Most of us end up enrolling in courses that our friends choose for themselves. This is where constant pushing and pulling between dreams and reality begins, laying the foundation of an unsatisfactory, monotonous and boring life. Make no mistake, choosing a major is the deciding factor for your career as well as rest of your life.

Researches show that a majority of students change their major either later in their college careers or while applying for post-graduate courses. The idea behind citing these facts is not to discourage or scare you. It is to tell you the importance of choosing your major carefully and give you some direction in your journey towards charting the right career path.

A business administration program with marketing major is ideal for you if you're good in networking, establishing professional relationships, planning and communicating in a way that positively influences the decision of others. If you want to be in the frontline while interacting with customers, Centennial's marketing program may be the right choice for you.

I know it's easier said than done, but I can tell you that this particular decision of yours will have a huge impact on your career. Way back when I had completed high school, I was also dealing with the confusion. My personal experience says that your first consideration in choosing a major should be your own interests.

Self-assessment is important. What excites you? What type of job, whether front-end or back-end, appeals to you? Do you think you can easily gel with people? Do you have strong convincing power? Finding answers to these questions is just a beginning.

The second consideration may be the assessment of your skills and abilities. You can do this by analyzing your communication skills, your behaviour pattern and the kind of activities or events you participated in while in school.

The third consideration may be the career you are interested in. Does a career in sales and marketing fascinate you? Can you work under pressure? Are you an outgoing person? If answer to most of your questions is a 'yes', you know that 'marketing' is the ideal major for you. In such a situation, you should opt for a business administration marketing program.

However, if you feel stuck at this point, you may seek counselling. Centennial College understands that it's really a tough decision to pick a major while attending a business administration course. Don't hesitate in seeking help. The college's career centre offers such a wealth of information that you will be able to make a decision within no time.

Although college is all about living an independent life, seeking advice won't harm you. In fact, it will enhance your overall experience.
