Consider personal interests and natural talents when choosing between a fashion design major and a fashion management major. Both offer education relating to fashion, but focus on different aspects of the profession. Fashion design schools often offer both options.

What to Expect from a Fashion Design Major

Courses in fashion design studies include: apparel construction techniques, color and design theory, computer-aided fashion design, computer grading, marking and cutting, fashion sketching, history of costume, pattern drafting and textile fibers and fabrics. Select a fashion design major if you enjoyed wearing personalized outfits as a child, or spent free time creating unique looks for family members. Obtain a bachelors or associates degree, depending on the program and credit hours completed.

In the 1980s, designers began using computers in the design process and hand drawn patterns became a thing of the past. Computer assisted design (CAD) classes are usually a mandatory element of fashion design training. Historical course components study style progression, where students are encouraged to seek inspiration from past designs while creating innovative looks for the future. Fabric and fiber studies, along with color and design theories allow students to create personalized looks.

What to Expect from a Fashion Management Major

Consider fashion management if as a child, you organized fashion shows for friends wearing the unique looks. Fashion management studies the business aspects of fashion. Courses include: principles of marketing, media planning and buying, color theory, e-commerce, brand marketing, international commerce and buying, business ownership, and textiles. Learn about trend spotting and running a successful fashion business. Receive an associates or bachelors degree depending on the program and credit hours completed.

Discover how the consumer market operates through marketing principles, an introductory business course where supply and demand is covered. Learn to approach advertising in an effective manner through media planning and buying. Receive instruction on international retail theories with international commerce and buying.

Many fashion design school students have certain characteristics in common. They must maintain flexibility and have a team-oriented attitude, understand and stay current on consumer trends and be able to sell a vision. Students should expect to work under pressure – both majors deal with projects that may or may not have time constraints.
