If you are going to be looking for web hosting anytime soon and you don’t have a clue about all the different options available to you then this article should be useful to you as it details everything you need to know about the two major types of server; dedicated servers and virtual private servers.
What is a dedicated server?
A dedicated server is usually used by very big websites which can expect a lot of traffic coming their way. The way it works is that a dedicated server is leased, usually at quite a high price, to a specific server. All of the resources of this server go to the customer and are not shared with anybody. Dedicated servers are usually harder to maintain since they are at the whim of only one customer and problems with the server may not be noticed for a while if the customer is on holiday.
What is a virtual private server?
Virtual private servers are a type of server which tends to be used with low to medium sized websites which don’t expect as much traffic as some of the larger sites on the internet. Virtual server tend to differ from other servers in that they are leased to a number of customers and each customer gets a portion of the server’s resources. As a result of the way this works it means that these servers will be nearly always cheaper than a dedicated server.
The advantages of a dedicated server
A dedicated server is great for websites which expect lots of high traffic; for example, a site like Amazon, CNN, or the BBC website will all be run on these servers because they have millions of people visiting them daily, if they tried to run a site on a virtual private server then they would quickly end up being overrun by mass amounts of traffic.
Another advantage that you can get from dedicated servers is that you can also run bigger operations as there is always more storage space on this type of server than any other server. This is especially good if you have some sort of database as part of your website. This is why sites like Wikipedia will always use a dedicated server.
The disadvantages of a dedicated server
The most obvious disadvantage that comes with using one of these servers is that it will always cost more than a virtual private server. The reasons for this are pretty self-explanatory; if you have more web resources then it will certainly cost you more than if you had less web resources.
The other disadvantage with these servers is that if you go on holiday and the server goes down then you may not notice and be able to notify the appropriate people to sort the problem out. The only way around this is to spend more money to have someone watch over it so you don’t have to worry about server issues.
A Comparison
As you can see, if you are looking to support a large web operation then you are usually left with no choice but to purchase a dedicated server as any other server will be incapable of supporting your operations. Yes it has its disadvantages in price when compared with other web hosting options, but when you look at what its designed for and how much you should be making back on a website that needs a dedicated server you will discover that most prices are actually a bargain.
