It was in the year of 1895 that China had formed a tightly bound to the basketball. Throughout the route of about 110 years, basketball movement had had a well combination with Chinese culture. Basketball has done grand benefits to Chinese people, like the promotion of physical condition and the advance of sports career. We all make out that basketball was initially invented in America. The second period was the stage of autonomic movement. Since the reign of the Kuomintang, China had regained the autonomy in sports. And after the Anti-Japanese War, the basketball movement had experienced a short booming. Shanghai especially was active in the field. During that period, the right to improve sports was totally under our Chinese control. And many proficient and gifted athletes had emerged at that time.
In the third stage, Chinese sports had come across a half-closed and self-developing state. This was due to the political factor. This period ought to be called the golden period of Chinese basketball movement. Numerous areas that were related with the basketball activity had come across their prospering phase as well. It showed Chinese people's ability to stand confidently amongst the international peoples.
The forth stage was the pioneering stage, lasting from 1974 to 1994. With the operation of reform and opening policy, the way of the developing basketball had been broadened. During the period loads of athletes bore in their minds the aspiration of revitalizing China through sports. While after the short development, the basketball activity has come into an embarrassing stage. The implementation of market economy had triggered the the shift of basketball movement. But for the athletes, there was no more responsibility and enterprising spirit. China seemed to lose its power as the 90s did. Though a few have entered the NBA and had been greatly sponsored by Nike, Chinese basketball domain still could not shake off its declining situation.
