Chennai was earlier called Madras and the name changed recently. The city is also famous for its cuisine. Since Chennai is on the sea coast, it had been the centre of activity during the reign of the Cholas and the Pallavas. It later was the point from where Portuguese, the Dutch and the British made their entry in the South of India.
Today, Chennai is one of the major metropolitan cities of India. It has a number of tourist attractions that a traveller can explore when in Chennai. There are a number of temples in Chennai that one can visit. The architecture of these temples is magnificent. Temple walls, pillars and ceilings of every temple are beautifully carved in the ethnic Dravidian style.
Sri Kapaleswar Temple, dedicated to lord Shiva is one of the popular temples in Chennai. The temple is situated in Mylapore area of the city. The temple has many stories and legends associated with it. Here one can see Goddess Parvati, in the form of peahen praying to lord Shiva. The bronze idols of the 63 Saivite Saints are another attraction in this temple.
Besides temples, the Marina beach is another popular tourist attraction in Chennai. It is considered as one of the longest beaches in the world stretching to more than 4 kilometers. On one side of the beach are a long chain of statues of great people from the state. Monuments and memorials are other popular tourist attractions in Chennai. The Marina beach is quite crowded during the weekend and holidays. Ice-cream stalls and other vendors line the beach.
Chennai is located in South India. It is easily accessible from all major cities in India. Chennai has its own airport and is well connected from Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore and Kolkata. Chennai is also well connected by rail network and many trains connect Chennai from different parts of the country.
