One of the more simple home accessories is the bathroom shower curtain and guess what, 99% are not made in the United States. Is that a problem really? Probably not as bathroom shower curtains, trash bags, etc are what we call commodities and really should be sourced where labor is cheap. But is that always the case?
The EPA and Environmental Health and Justice have come clean, this PVC Shower Curtains are laden with 108 volatile organic compounds, poisonous chemicals that off-gas into the air and can persist for the first month while the curtain hangs in your home. That just out of the pack, shower curtain smell can be toxic. They are difficult to clean and end up in a landfill where they don't decompose and could release dangerous substances into the ground. The alternative that we liked the best is a Linen shower curtain made of 100% hemp found at buygreensavvy.com.
Interestingly enough, many brands in the United States source more than just commodities to bring us the products we use every day. There is a website alibaba.com that specifically brings together offshore manufacturers with domestic brands. The $95 hemp shower curtain that you just bought seems like a great deal, except that is probably cost less than $5 for labor, materials and shipping. How many jobs in the United States did that create for our manufacturing base? You guess it, zero. I won’t even start to comment on labor conditions or the fact that some of these offshore manufacturing companies are housed in countries that the United States is in debt to in the hundreds of Billions of dollars. Do yourself a favor, check the label or ask your retailer, is this product made in the U.S.?
Other safe and natural shower curtain choices are: organic cotton, hemp, bamboo or linen. Extra perks for hemp shower curtains, hemp’s anti-microbial, doesn’t need a liner, and it’s really durable so it’ll last. Even plain old conventionally grown cotton shower curtains are a better choice than vinyl. At least you can wash any these natural fabrics and keep reusing them for as long as you like. Whereas non-washable, mildewed vinyl needs replacing every year or two and just winds up in a landfill for a very long time.
On the other side of the coin is where the U.S. and another country benefits from the product. In this case, I use the example of the Biobag. This brand uses U.S. grown corn (benefits farmers), and manufactures biodegradable dog poop bags, biodegradable garbage bags, and other biodegradable bags for reselling across the globe. The manufacturing takes place in Norway and both countries benefit. Additionally, this product is great for the environment as compared to the pvc based bags provided in most of our grocery stores.
When you are redoing your bathroom, or shopping on line or at your grocery store, consider moving to a United States manufactured hemp or cotton shower curtain. Purchasing natural fiber goods made in the United States supports alternative agriculture and provide long term value without the long terms environmental impacts. Additionally when you shop, think of where the product is made, it should be on the box. If you buy online, send an email to verify. Check the label and start our market stimulation locally rather than wait for Washington to tell you we are out of the recession.
