Mobile phone technology is constantly evolving. Each passing day smartphone manufacturers try to outdo themselves by creating the most innovative handsets in the market. Android is rolling out devices that sport massive touchscreens such as the Samsung Galaxy Note and powerful processors just like the HTC Sensation XE with its 1.5 GHz dual-core processor. Apple has also upped the ante with its iPhone 4S sporting the highly unique voice-commanded virtual personal assistant Siri. Both have released the most up to date software.
Android's Ice Cream Sandwich has rolled out as well as Apple's iOS 5. These updated versions of their software come with features we never thought possible. With this in mind, what happened to RIM? What do their new smartphones such as the Blackberry Bold 9900 and the Torch 9810 have to unique offer? Are they still as popular as before? Let's find out.
When it comes to processing power, RIM's two new handsets come packed with 1.2 GHz single-core processors under the hood. These processors offer twice as much performance compared to the 624 MHz single-core processors on past models such as the 9800. However, they are still no match for the dual-cores offered by the competition.
When it comes to screen size, the Blackberry Bold 9900 comes with a 2.8 inch TFT capacitive touch screen. The Torch 9810 is a slider that comes with a slightly bigger 3.2 inch TFT capacitive touch screen. These panels offer touch interfaces that was not present in some of its past models. However, RIM's rivals still offer more real estate.
So what makes these RIM handsets so special? Can they still compete with what the competition has to offer? Can they still rely on the loyalty of their customers? Fortunately, these smartphones come with a feature that revolutionized mobile instant messaging. This feature is the Blackberry Messenger (BBM). This gives the phones chatting prowess.
The BBM is the very reason why RIM's handsets are still highly popular. They have attracted two major demographics. These are the businessmen and the youth. On the BBM, businessmen are offered a cost effective way to communicate with colleagues and clients. With the youth, they are given a cheap way to chat with friends or a group of friends. With the QWERTY keyboards on these handsets, both target audiences can chat efficiently and with ease.
As you can see, RIM does need to outfit its phones with powerful hardware to be favored by the consumer. It has formulated the QWERTY keyboard and the BBM that equates to chatting prowess on the Blackberry Bold 9900 and the Torch 9810.
