When dealing with a divorce you need a team behind you and you need to follow a few simple steps. Divorce is a big step and something that weighs heavily on people’s minds.
So the steps you should take before even thinking about taking the step of divorce is to really first think about some marriage counseling. Think about whether your marriage can be saved.
I have handled divorces now for over 10 years and I have some pretty strong opinions about what needs to be done before you can get a divorce. Some of those things can be marriage counseling. Have you really thought about saving your marriage?
The other thing you should really think about, if there is really no hope for the marriage, is divorce counseling. So taking this huge step is going to be definitely a big change in your life. So you really should work with someone. Work with a marriage counselor, through divorce counseling. Work with a therapist. Maybe talk to family or friends. Even talk to someone in your church. They can help you either find that person or guide you through the process of considering divorce.
You can deal with issues like grief and how to cope, how to pick up the pieces and go on with your life. So I always suggest the very first step is to talk to a therapist, talk to a counselor, not necessarily about saving the marriage … if you’ve given it some real thought and feel that it’s over … but work with someone so you have a team of people who can support you with what you’re about to go through.
The next step you can take with the concept of getting a team together to support you through getting this divorce, (if that’s where you’re headed), is to talk to an attorney. There are so many legal issues that come up with either a separation or a divorce. You really should get as much information as you can about it before you even discuss divorce with your spouse.
There’s a lot to know about divorce in Arizona. Our laws are pretty complex. We have a concept called Community Property in Arizona. And for many people that doesn’t make a whole lot of sense. But talking to a qualified divorce attorney can really help you and let you know what the outcome of your divorce could be, what the best options could be for you ahead of time.
So rather than start your divorce without a team, I always suggest get a counselor, get an attorney, talk to a CPA, talk to a financial advisor. Anticipate what could happen and get a team together to help you anticipate.
