Chandeliers are often reminiscent of the 1920’s ballroom where women with empire waist gowns danced with men with high waist jackets and tight trousers.
Chandeliers are often reminiscent of the 1920’s ballroom where women with empire waist gowns danced with men with high waist jackets and tight trousers. But thanks to innovative designers, these flamboyant designs can now be substituted with simple and modern designs. Chandeliers need not be reserved for living and dining rooms, they can be used practically everywhere; from bedrooms, to kitchen, and even bathrooms.

Crystal remains a favorite with chandelier lovers who prefer it for its glow and the warmth that it emanates. These are basically glasses that act as a prism and refract light that passes through it. The glasses are coated with lead oxide that is added to soften the glass. However in the days of yore, people used rock crystals- a form of quartz that were cut by hand. A lot of designers have now experimented with crystals, and are increasingly using them for their decorative element, rather than using them for ornate and grand designs.

When used sensibly, these chandeliers can add lots of style to your place. Just by controlling the light, you can set the mood for the evening. For instance, if it’s a small dinner for two, you can turn of the over head lights in the chandelier, and light some candles. And if the room is to be set for a cocktail party, you may light the room brightly and use the chandelier to its maximum effect. Remember, people always gather around light. You may have to use many light fixtures, to ensure that the room does not look crowded in a certain place, and empty in another. Floor lamps, candles and sconces can be used to serve as light sources.

Manufacturers have now begun to introduce sophisticated systems wherein the entire lighting arrangement can be controlled through pre-set themes. Thus, you can change the ambience in a room through a single switch that can help you make changes in the floor lamps, table lamps, coves and other fixtures in the room.

Another important factor when it comes to chandeliers is its proportion. If the chandelier’s too big when compared to the room, you risk the room looking overcrowded and if the chandelier’s too small it pales in comparison and looks insignificant.

The color combination is also an important aspect to be considered when buying chandeliers. Needless to say, they should match the color scheme of the house. You wouldn’t want a contemporary art house type of chandelier to match a classic theme.
