The certificate attestation is the process of verifying the originality of a document & affirming its authenticity by attaching it with the signature of the verifying personnel. The attestation of certificates is mainly done to so as to enable the documents get furnished as legal papers whenever required & nobody can point a finger at their originality.

The certificate attestation is a sign in itself that proves the originality of documents beyond doubt. During attestation of certificates the Xerox copies of the documents along with the original ones are presented before the concerned authority who after carefully checking for their originality seals the documents with his/her signature in the designated area. Thus attestation of certificates can be seen more as a declaration by an authority figure that the documents have been executed in line with all legal formalities in his/her presence. The certificate attestation is frequently mentioned in legal papers such as deed or will to ensure that the furnished documents are valid & not duplicate. Moreover, the certificates are attested by fulfilling all the legal criteria of attestation in the personal presence of the witness.
Though certificate attestation procedure is more less the same but it may vary depending upon the purpose where it is to be used. In addition to this the country where the document is to be submitted also plays a crucial role as legal rules may vary from one country to another. For example attestation of certificates for use in consulate of embassies is done by the Govt. of India. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) & Human Resource Development Department (HRD) are two different departments that manage the whole certificate attestation procedure in India.
Attestation of certificates can be classified into three different types depending on their use.
1. Educational Attested Certificates
These types of attested certificates are greatly used in achieving basic to advance level courses. Therefore students pursuing post graduate courses like MCA, MBA, MCom, MSc, MA, degree programs like BTech, BE, BSc, BBA, BA, BCom, MBBS, CA or secondary or higher secondary courses like +2/PDC/HSC, 10th/SSLC/CBSE go for education certificates attestation.
2. Non-Educational Attested Certificates
Such attested certificates have great demand in occasions other than education. It includes events such as birth, marriage, death, affidavit, divorce, transfer, experience proof & several other occasions where provisional certificate attestation is required.
3. Secondary Documents
Such type of documents include transcripts, mark lists, selection letter, photo, passport copy & registration details that are to be submitted at the time of attestation of the birth certificates, marriage certificates, divorce certificates & transfer certificates to name a few. However, the type & number of secondary documents may differ depending on the country of the applicant.
