Damascus a city which is maintaining the heritage of modernization and cultural activities. It contains jobs in particular fields like travel, finance and real estate. Every expats are welcome to this city to try there luck.
Damascus, also popularly known as ‘City of Jasmin’ is the capital of Syria. It is a cultural and religious hub of Levant, the region that includes Lebanon, Syria, Israel, Palestine and Jordon. It is among the few ‘oldest continuously inhabited cities’ in the Middle East along with Beirut, Jerusalem, Gaza City, Istanbul and the likes. Being the center of a large metropolitan area, the scope for jobs in Damascus is huge.

Damascus is situated in Southwestern Syria, on the eastern foothills of the Eastern Lebanon mountain range. It is one of the 14 governorates of Syria which are then divided into sixty districts and further classified into sub-districts followed by another categorization into the smaller administrative units, villages. Being a trade center from historical times, jobs in Damascus have always been in large numbers. With developments in modern trade and political domain of the city, other sectors are also getting attention. Some of them are tourism, hospitality, real estate, finance, transportation and various others.

A trade center from ages, Damascus distributed goods to the countries of the entire Arabian Peninsula. It even organizes an international trade exposition annually from last 55 years i.e. since 1955. Good investments in the city’s tourism sector can fetch great results owing to the abundant cultural wealth of Damascus. This calls for pumping money in hospitality and travel sector to attract tourists from all over the world. To support the developments, every industry needs manpower so that required operations can be carried out across all levels. Subsequently, tourism jobs in Damascus are now available in large numbers for both expatriates and nationals but they should be trained enough to manage international tourists.

Besides tourism, real estate sector also shows good potential for growth and expansion especially in the commercial sector. The city houses numerous industries like textiles, food processing, cement, chemical, etc. and demands large amount of office space. The need for commercial space is much higher than the supply since it is still an immature market that needs to be developed fully. The fact that Cushman & Wakefield (C & W) has identified its office space as the ‘world’s eighth most expensive in 2009’ reinforces the gargantuan potential of Damascus as a realty hub. The construction industry, thus, offers jobs in Damascus for engineers, project managers, site supervisors, contract managers and other related professions.

In its financial segment, the city is making considerable progress especially from last 2 years. The Damascus stock exchange opened in March 2009 and is the only one in the entire Syria. This has created not only investment opportunities for both short-term and long-term investors but also generated finance jobs in Damascus like that of brokers, managers, chartered accountants and others. With higher investments made in various sectors and the consequent increase in circulation of money, finance jobs are on a rise. The stock exchange is looking for well trained and proficient finance professionals who could deal with activities in the market.

It is interesting and noteworthy that despite privatization and liberalization, traditional handcrafts and copper engraving is still prevalent in the city. One can find artisans keeping alive the traditions though just in some parts of the old city.

Damascus is an upcoming choice for expatriates as its economy is now opening up and working towards an overall growth. Those who are well trained and experienced can easily grab jobs in Damascus that are usually advertised either in newspapers or job portals. There are not many well qualified Syrians due to lack of academic and professional infrastructure, thus, raising the demand for expatriate workforce especially in travel, finance and construction sectors.
