Considering the rising cost of fuel, just about everyone would want to have a car that is very fuel efficient. However, before you consider purchasing a car that is more energy efficient you should know that there actually ways for you to improve the fuel efficiency of your present car. Below are a few car tuning tips that you can use to improve your car’s mpg.
Change the Car Filter – The purpose of your car’s air filter is to keep the engine clean of contaminants. However if this is so dirty that you cannot see through it when you hold it up against a light bulb, it can decrease your mpg by as much as 10%. While newer engines are equipped with the technology to compensate for a dirty filter by feeding less fuel to the engine, a cleaner filter will let your car run at its best in all cases whether the car is old or new.
Change The Oil – It is advisable to that you change the oil in your car every three months or every 3,000 miles. This is because as the time goes by the oil becomes very thick making it incapable of functioning as it was meant to be. However, while you can do this on your own it may be better to have a professional do the job to ensure that the process is carried out safely.
In changing your oil, it is best to stick to the grade of oil recommended by your car’s manufacturer. Doing this has shown to save drivers up to 2% in fuel efficiency. In choosing the oil, you may also may to choose one that is marked Energy Conserving. You could also choose to purchase synthetic oil as this tends to last longer requiring of you to change it less often and it is also more environmentally safe.
Get New Spark Plugs – Believe it or not, but a misfiring spark plug that is dirty can reduce your car’s mpg by as much as 7%. If you have two misfiring spark plug your fuel efficiency can be reduced by as much as 20%. To prevent this, install new spark plugs for every 30,000 miles you drive for optimum fuel efficiency.
Clean Your Fuel System – As time goes by you will find that your engine components and fuel injectors can become gummed up with residues from the gas. As a result, to keep your car or vehicle running at its optimum having high fuel efficiency, run a good fuel cleaner every 6 months through the gas tank. If you cannot do this easily, it is best to employ the services of a mechanic who will be better able to get this done.
Doing other simply things like removing all the unwanted or unnecessary items from your trunk can also help to make your car run better. This is because doing this will basically reduce the weight of your car causing the engine to work less, and once the engine is working less it will require less fuel.
