In business, efficiency equals success. Saving time and money while increasing profits is the goal of any business, and to be at its best a business must analyze how it conducts its operations. Processes and procedures that are inefficient must be eliminated, and using a business process model is one of the best ways to identify that which helps or hurts a business.

What is a Business Process Model?

Business process modeling is usually performed by managers and business analysts to improve efficiency and quality. Many times information technology is involved, allowing for simulations to be performed in order to allow for closer analysis. One goal of business process modeling is to challenge the way a business currently thinks of itself. A business process model helps a business make decisions about information systems, training, documentation and other areas considered keys to its success. It's also very useful in helping information technology departments create programming that works in conjunction with the business, rather than those which may hinder operations.

Business Process Modeling Courses

Graduate students in most business schools complete a business process modeling course to prepare them for future management positions. In a business process modeling course, students learn how to use flowcharts, diagrams and mind maps to document the various processes of a business and create a process model. The model begins by identifying a goal, then analyzes the activities used in the process. Students taking these courses learn about various techniques of analysis including activity sequence, authority structure and information requirements. Roles and responsibilities of everyone involved in the process are carefully analyzed to determine how important their role is, then the process model determines how the activity integrates with other processes to reach a conclusion about its efficiency.

How Useful is Business Process Modeling?

Business process modeling is useful to a business in many ways. It can be used as a central knowledge base, allowing the business to have a baseline for its standards of operation. It can also be used to identify areas where employees need more training, which will also help a business become more efficient. Developing business growth plans is also another way the model is used, letting the business analyze which parts of it are growing fast and others which are growing slower than anticipated. Finally, using it in the design of computer systems is perhaps the most important way the model is used for efficiency purposes. Using a business process model helps to encourage communication and a sense of collaboration between management and information technology departments.

Limitations

While a business process model has many uses, it also has its limitations both internally and externally. Since business situations are always changing, it is impossible to design a model that will cover every situation. Thus, an unusual situation can dictate a response that may force a business to deviate from the model. Also, a domino effect can happen if this situation develops, which can wind up having long-lasting effects on the business.

While it may have limitations, a business process model has proven to be a very useful tool when it comes to helping a business become more efficient.
