When job opportunities are scarce, competition is high and employers are able to be more specific in their wants and needs. However, the most valuable attribute that someone owns is their reputation. Building a professional network is crucial to furthering your career or changing employment.
How important to you is a consumer report or a previous buyer’s feedback prior to a major purchase? Would you buy a brand over another just because your friends or family recommended it? Hiring managers are no different. Building trust in an unknown individual is time consuming and risky. Often, managers or owners will welcome referrals from current employees. So much so, that some businesses offer referral bonus programs.
Building a professional and reliable network will ensure your name is mentioned when a new position opens. Key elements when looking to advance within the same company are:
• Stand out above the rest. Get noticed by going above and beyond your required tasks or duties. Help others as often as you can.
• Don’t get involved in the co-worker’s gossip. This can lead to office “cliques” that may result in siding one group against the other.
• Get to know everyone in your business. Take an effort to say good morning or a simple nod or wave to others in the office or those you pass in on the way in.
• Always smile and be in a good mood. Not only is this contagious, but you will present a level of professionalism that everyone will remember.
Once you leave a position or place of employment, make sure you leave in positive standing. Obtain contact information from co-workers and employers and stay in touch. This network is a reliable network that can sustain your reputation and assist in future endeavors.
You could build a network without even knowing it. The “Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon” phenomenon, can work for employment as well. This theory implies that within six people, you can link one person with another. In our everyday lives, we make connections that we didn’t even realize we are making.
Susan goes shopping every Tuesday at her local grocery store. Every Tuesday, she saw Mary, the cashier and Frank the grocery bagger. Susan and Frank exchanged casual conversation every week. conversation, Susan mentioned that she used to sell real estate, but opted to stay home with her children. Now that her children are older, she was ready to get back to work. She didn’t know, that Frank had a daughter, Lucy, that was married to Greg that worked for an attorney who’s wife, Darla, owned her own real estate company. With a few phone calls, Frank was able to get Susan an interview with Darla.
Building and maintaining a professional network is not difficult. By staying productive, positive, and open to connecting with others you can maintain a professional image and reputation. More often than not, your reputation will land your perfect job, more than your resume.
