Queensland is where Australia starts warming up- the southern part of the state is hot and sunny in the summer, and the northern part is literally in the tropics. Brisbane is the state’s capital, and is a city of fun in the sun, a laidback and forward thinking urban area situated on the Brisbane River. It was once considered the country cousin to the more cosmopolitain Sydney and Melbourne, but much has changed. There are numerous bars, cafes and restaurants, nightlife and it is easy to pass a morning or afternoon wandering the South Bank and its new Parklands- but the city has retained its relaxed atmosphere.

One of the main attractions of Brisbane is what lies just to the south- the Gold Coast. It is an urban playground, where apartment buildings, shops, bars, restaurants and theme parks meet sand and surf. Dissected by waterways, this city is Australia’s answer to the glamour of the Riviera. Surfer’s Paradise and Southport form the centre of the area, and the theme parks are found in Oxenford, behind the residential and commercial areas which cluster around the beaches. Said beaches are of course the natural treasure of the Gold Coast, and there are many- Surfer’s Paradise, Broadbeach, Burleigh Heads, Palm Beach and more. Surfer’s Paradise is the busiest amongst them, and they are quieter the further south you go.

Heading north from Brisbane, one of the first fun places to stop is the Great Sandy National Park- which is quite sandy, as the name suggests. It has towering sand cliffs, sands of different colours and sandblows as well as waterways, lakes, remnants of rainforest and diverse wildlife. Bundaberg also lies up this coast, home of the rum and ginger beer by the same name.

South of the city, after the Gold Coast, there are many small beachside towns- Byron Bay, Ballina, Yamba. There are also an abundance of national parks, state forests and whatnot down this way, which is perfect for those wanting to experience the subtropical flora and fauna of Queensland and northern New South Wales. The very adventurous may like to climb Mount Warning, just south of the Queensland-New South Wales border.

Venture inland from the big smoke and there is Toowoomba- called the Garden City by residents and Australians. It is a place of over 150 public parks and gardens. Also in the area are the towns of Dalby and Warwick. Closer to the city is the spectacular water reserve Lake Wivenhoe. The peaceful lake permits only non-fuel powered boats, and is a scenic venue for a lot of watersport fun.
