One of the major concerns that we, as business owners participating in the global marketplace, we need to address the various governances and compliance issues related to our financial matters. Basically, we need to have our financial practices to be uniform across all industries and markets in both the national and international business. One way these governances and compliances are met thru the standards established by the International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS). All the Brisbane Accountants firms strive to achieve either IFRS or its standards equivalent to better compete in the international marketplace. But how does the Australian equivalency of the IFRS (A-IFRS) stand up to the IFRS.
There are a few variations in the practice of standards as applied by the members of the Australian Accounting Standards Board in general and the Brisbane Accountants specifically. Some of these areas include in the rules of common controls, insurance contracts, extractive industries with alternative reporting practices leading to report presentations, and governmental contracts to name a few.The Australian Accountant Standards Board have found that some of the categories may require additional documentation and or collection of fees as a result of cross or multiple categorizing of business activities, causing the potential for confusion and misrepresentation of an organization’s total financial standing.
A survey taken in 2005 by the Grant Thornton group to the members of the Australian Accountancy Standards Board and representatives of the business accountancy community, four years after the initial application and adoption of the IFRS, to assess the overall performance, acceptance, and best practices of the established IFRS equivalency based on Australian accountancy businesses and industry entities communities. Although the general community acceptance of the standards was across all levels of entities that must comply with financial disclosure governances, they still felt that some overrides and or reforms of some of the main categories outlined in the IFRS. Much of this was determined by business analysis that in its initial state, an adverse reaction may ripple thru all the markets due to the complications or misunderstanding of the operations and performances of their represented organizations globally and its relevance relationship to the standards of the macro-economy of the local community. The appearance of some of the required documents may bring about concerns related to both earnings and absorption deductions reporting. A simplification and other reformed amendments resulting in the creation of the Australian International Reporting Standards (A-IFRS).
In comparison to many other industrial countries who are struggling to bring their own international accounting systems on line, Australia’s IFRS program is being incorporated into business practices by all the Brisbane Accountants firms, at least in the calendar year reporting schedules with the ones requiring fiscal year report (i.e. government contracting) to start shortly.
Brisbane accountants concur on the view with Australian accountants that as their professional development includes the greater understanding of the global marketplace and the evolution of international financial best practices, the better competitively positioned they will be for their organization and the various entities they represent.
