Before Attempting This at Home, Look at What is Involved

One of the reasons why even the most handy-man around the home, looks to professionals when considering installing a back or front yard patio, is because of the intensive processes involved. It may not look hard to have accomplished when complete, but as this is generally a high traffic area, it has to be done right the first time; or it may come apart at the seams. There would be nothing worse than a patio crumbling to dust beneath the feet of guests as they sip their pre-prandial cocktails, during a patio-warming BBQ party. Building a brick paver patio is little bit like WWE – Roar, "do not attempt this at home"!

Building a Patio in a Nutshell

Unfortunately human beings are not small enough for a brick paver patio to be installed inside a nutshell and this does generally tend to be a big job and a largish area - the first thing to identify; is how large the area should be. The size of the property will determine this to a degree, however making a patio large enough for four guests to slow dance with each other as long as they can only turn in very small circles, would be a mistake. We don't want guests falling off the patio and damaging them-selves, say nothing of the expensive shrubbery surround that was just installed. But if the patio is for a retired couple, living the quiet life, they may only require sufficient space for a BBQ, bistro table and chairs. A brick paver patio does need to be at least 30sq ft for comfort.

The Design of Your Brick Paver Patio

This is vitally important as it needs to take into consideration the rest of the building; usually, but not always - a home. Patio designs complement and reflect the buildings they annex; they do not standalone. Use of materials, colors and textures found inside the home, may be carried through successfully to the outdoors, in particular with brick paver installations. In fact homes with cedar and other wood sidings look stunning with sand molded brick patios. Will the design incorporate space for a BBQ, or perhaps the home owner wants this built-in? The brick pavers used for the patio, may be incorporated into BBQ design. Do they want to hang a hammock, use the patio for potting, catch, sun, shade, a mixture (NSEW orientation), what are typical entertaining patterns? All of these factors and more are relevant to the design. Only once this has all been agreed upon, does the landscaper break ground.

Considerations

The brick paver patio needs to be constructed where it does not interfere with windows, doors, spigots, electricity or utility wires, pipes and boxes. We have not even broken ground yet! The plot still needs to be marked, a utility locate ordered – as well as the following: grade, stake, grid, elevate, pitch, check water run-off, excavate, compact sub-soil, prepare the base, lay crushed stone, compact that, check uniformity, set screed guides, compact again, and so on. How about we just hand out Landscape Art's number?
