Breast Implants: What You Need to Know

Many women are interested in breast augmentation surgery, but they are often unsure of what is important to know when considering this procedure. Dr. Michael A. Bogdan, a plastic surgeon who frequently performs breast enlargement in Dallas, highlights the key facts every woman needs to know before breast augmentation surgery.
Breast augmentation is one of the most popular cosmetic surgery procedures. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, in 2009 breast augmentation was the top surgical procedure in the United States. While women surely have different reasons for considering the procedure, one thing is certain: it is extremely important for a woman to be well informed about her implant options before having surgery. Below are important things to know when considering breast implants, including cost, information about the procedure itself, and the types of implants offered.

Implant Types

According to most of my previous patients, choosing between silicone gel and saline implants can be one of the most difficult decisions when considering breast enlargement in Dallas. Oftentimes women are not completely sure what the main differences are between the two.

Silicone gel: In 2006, the FDA approved the use of silicone gel breast implants for those who are 22 years old or older. Though they cost a little more than saline implants, this implant type generally is reported to feel and look the most natural. Because silicone gel implants may rupture without showing any signs of rupture, the FDA recommends that women who have these implants get routine breast MRI studies beginning 3 years after their surgery.

Saline: Saline implants are also an option for women looking to enhance their breasts. These implants do not come pre-filled, which allows for greater flexibility during surgery than silicone implants. Further, in the case of a rupture, saline will be harmlessly absorbed by the body and the leak will be immediately noticeable.

Each implant type has its benefits; therefore, I tell my plastic surgery patients in Dallas that the choice between implants should be dependent on what they hope to achieve with the procedure as well as their natural physique. These days, a majority of my patients are choosing silicone gel breast implants, a trend I expect will continue.

Combination Procedures

Many women want the look of youthful breasts and feel that getting breast implants in Dallas can help achieve this look. However, augmentation alone may not be enough, especially for women whose breasts have begun to sag. For these women, a breast lift followed by augmentation can help create fullness at the top of the breast and improve overall breast shape and position. If you are considering breast enhancement, be open to the idea that your surgeon may recommend surgery that goes beyond insertion of implants.

Cost

The cost of a breast augmentation can vary greatly; however, in general, saline breast implants cost less than silicone. Other factors that can influence cost include:

• Qualifications of the surgeon
• Location of surgery (outpatient facility or hospital)
• Qualifications of the person administering anesthesia
• Market factors (large city versus rural location)

About the Procedure

Breast enlargement typically lasts anywhere from 1 to 2 hours. Patients are usually placed under general anesthesia and surgery is performed on an outpatient basis. There are several incisions a surgeon can choose, and it will largely depend on the patient's preferences and anatomy. The most common incision sites are the inframammary fold (where the breast meets the chest wall) and periareolar (around the nipple). The implants are then placed either below or above the pectoralis (chest) muscle, depending on the amount of breast tissue a patient has as well as the look they hope to achieve with breast implants.

The Next Step

Understanding how the procedure works and implant options is important, but it is also essential to choose a qualified surgeon to perform the procedure. Checking to see if a surgeon is board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery is a great way to ensure that the physician has extensive training and knowledge.
