Science has made it possible now for every woman to get enhanced bust lines, if they wish to. This is done by placing implants in breasts, a surgery known as Breast Enhancement. In case you want to join the bandwagon, there are few things you need to discuss with your surgeon prior to the surgery; like size, implant placement, incision pattern, implant type and if you need a breast lift or not.
How is breast enhancement done?
Inserting a breast implant behind the breast or behind chest wall muscle is how breast augmentation is done. Based on the nature of the surgery, the surgery may take 1-3 hours time. The doctor after giving either general anaesthesia or intravenous sedation makes an incision in one of these hidden areas to reduce visible scarring:
- Under the breast (inframammary incision)
- In the arm pit (transaxillary incision)
- Around the nipple (periareolar incision)
- In the navel area (transumbilical or TUBA incision)
In these incisions, a special surgical tool is used to channel a way to insert the implant. The implants are placed in these 3 positions - subglandular, partial submuscular and complete muscular. Two types of implants are used these days - Saline breast implants and Silicone breast implants. Depending on body type, skin elasticity and breast anatomy, the implant is selected by the doctor.
Saline breasts implants are packed with disinfected salt water, which is given in varying amounts to determine firmness, shape and feel of the breasts. On the other hand silicone breasts implants are packed with elastic gel that moves and feels like natural tissue of the breast. Saline implants are given to women of 18 years and above and silicone implants are given to women of 22 years of age and above. At younger age, implants are also used but only for reconstructive reasons.
After the implants are placed the openings are closed with many layered sutures, with skin adhesive and surgical tapes. These incision lines and post-surgery swelling will disappear with time. Often doctors suggest breast lift along with breast augmentation, which prevents the sagging effect due to weight loss, pregnancy or advancing age. This will take longer time to cure than the time taken for only breast augmentation.
Few things to note for Pre and Post Surgery
To detect possible changes in breast tissues, your surgeon might recommend a mammogram of your baseline before and after the surgery. If you smoke, you will be asked to stop it till the recovery is over. Medicines like Aspirin, which are anti-inflammatory, and can increase the bleeding, are stopped before going for the surgery.
After the boob job is done, your breasts will be covered with a surgical bra or wrapped in gauze dressings. When the dressings are removed, you will be instructed to wear a support bra. Your stitches will come out in almost a week and by the similar time you may be allowed to take a shower.
After your surgery, the first two to five days, your chest region may feel stiff and sore. In this recovery period, you may have trouble raising your hands and so you will be asked to avoid movements or any strenuous job. You must be prepared that your breasts may feel extra sensitive. However, this will pass after few days or weeks, and if it persists over a month, then you need to consult your surgeon again. Thus, this is some things you must know about the procedure of breast augmentation.
