Tasmania's capital city Hobart has an exciting history and is still a great place to visit for a taste of action and adventure.
The beautiful landscape of Hobart, Tasmania makes it easy to forget that it actually has an exciting and bloody history as a convict settlement from the early 1800's. Hobart's first tenants were British outlaws such as thieves, prostitutes and other criminals. However amongst these so called undesirables and their families were some very talented tradesmen who used their Georgian influences to design and build what is now a lovely picturesque Hobart city. Many of this colonial architecture have been preserved and are used for historic sites, public buildings, country houses and cottages and Hobart hotels.
These 'convicts' did an excellent job of documenting their experiences as they built the city and community and landmarks such as Port Arthur, an old timber station, can be viewed with tours and information on how it was used during the brutal mid 19th century repressions. Today tourism does well as visitors are fascinated by Hobart's macabre history, and ghost walks and re-enactments are exciting activities for those who aren't too faint of heart.
If you are used to the hustle and bustle of city life, you don't need to worry about getting around in Hobart, with only 200,000 residents you don't have to worry about rush hours and getting around to see other areas of Tasmania. With a smaller population Hobart allows you to explore the city and have the option to go out of the city into the wild countryside and up towards Mt Wellington.
Modern day Captain James Cook's and Captain Thaddeus Bellingshausen's often set off from Hobart as it is the closest point to Antartica and at times the cold southern wind that whistles up the Derwent River makes you realise how close Antartica really is. Apart from the odd bitter breeze the weather is quite mild and if you go between November and March it can get lovely and warm with highs of up to 40 degrees.
If you like boats and Yachts then the Port of Hobart is a must, on the eastern side of Hobart, at Sullivan's Cove, there are lots of inlets and coves with thousands of boats, yachts and sea crafts dotted around. If you are around after Boxing Day you may catch the end of the Hobart Yacht Race.
If you like action and adventure then a Tasmanian holiday is perfect for you, full of scandal, excitement and modern day adventurers, and a Hobart hotel is in the centre of all the action.
