A Brief History of Cebu
Before the Spanish discovery of the Philippines, Cebu was already buzzing with human activity. It was the location of the Rahjanate of Cebu, a Philippine state that was considered to have been a center of commerce. It is stated that most early trades with Chinese, Malays, and Indians were once made here.
In 1521, the Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan stepped foot on the shores of what is now present day Mactan, a component of Cebu City. Not counting their unremarkable stop in Samar, that's where Europeans first made considerable contact with the natives. It was also here that Magellan was killed by the chief of Cebu, the infamous Lapu-Lapu. Many years later, the first Spanish colony in the Philippines was established by Miguel Lopez de Legazpi. Today, almost 500 years later, it is now one of the most progressive provinces in the Philippines.
How do I get there and what's there to do?
Getting flights to Cebu is relatively easy. It's a modern metropolis, and the airport is has international, domestic, and budget carriers alike. There are many international flights that fly straight to the city. Some airlines offer cheap Manila flights for all those transiting to Cebu via the capital. For tourists who aren't familiar with air travel, you will find by-land and by-sea alternatives too.
Because Cebu was played host to the first Spanish settlement in the country, a lot of remnants of it are still noticeable today. An example of such, Magellan's Cross, is regarded as one of the most popular tourist attractions in the city. The cross was planted by Magellan upon his entry and was brought to convert the locals to Christianity. It's been preserved throughout the years and is housed in a chapel alongside another famous landmark, The Basilica Minore del Santo Nino. The Basilica, built during the 16th century, is the oldest church in the Philippines. Additionally, it is home to a museum that displays the history of Cebu.
Other than the historical landmarks in the city proper, Cebu also hosts some of the most breathtaking beaches in the country. Most beaches have excellent white sand and clear turquoise waters. Travellers seeking to head to the beach just have to travel a short distance from the city.
It's ideal to come when Cebu is enjoying one of its many religious festivals. The most well-known, Sinulog, happens every third Sunday of January. Local and international tourists come in droves to experience the festivities. During the day, processions and parades pass through the main thoroughfares in the city. At night, street parties are plentiful and bring people together.
Flights to Cebu could be booked online via a travel or airline website. Cheap Manila flights can be bought online for visitors using the capital as a gateway. Visit Cebu to experience a casual beach lifestyle fused with modern day conveniences.
