Gone are the days of the past when simple things were so much fun. When a trunk full of thrown away clothes could give hours of pleasure and anything out of the kitchen cupboard could be turned into a prop for a story set far away.

Walk into any of the warehouse styled toy stores that are mushrooming around the country and you will find a galaxy of toys that pulsate, gyrate and blink bright lights. All of them require batteries to run and will probably break after your children bang them around a couple of times. Stamped with trademark characters from movies and television shows, the last thing they encourage is the imagination or creativity. Often giving children a wrong outlook of the world they inhabit, these toys slowly but surely turn them into mindless zombies.

Today to bring up children with their curiosity awakened and their innocence intact you might have to resort to some traditional techniques and ideas. Remember the fun you’ve had on long winter afternoons doing Christmas craft projects with your parent. If you want to give a bit of that to your child, bring out the craft supplies and indulge in some good old fashioned crafts for kids.

Some of the best craft ideas are made from stuff that you can find lying around in the house. A simple yet effective craft project that really feeds a young imagination is a sock puppet. Easily made from any sock that you have lost the pair to, a hand puppet is easy to make and can be finished in one afternoon. Draw any feature you like on the sock or if you have some basic craft supplies glue some wiggle eyes into place for feature. Cross stitch a mouth into place or use a crochet needle to attach some wool onto its head and voila you sock buddy is ready.

A more elaborate craft idea that can keep your child occupied for days is a Dollhouse. You don’t have to buy an expensive doll house for you little one to play with. A Dollhouse can be an ongoing project and can be built either from household items like shoe boxes and cans or if you want an elaborate house that you can keep as an heirloom look online or in the hobby store for dollhouse kits. These kits come with instructions for assembly and also can have a range of miniatures that go with them.
