Bodh Gaya is a village in the state of Bihar and the place where Gautama Buddha attained supreme Enlightenment. Bodh Gaya is one of the most popular attractions in North India which is visited by tourists of all caste and religion albeit it is a sacred Buddhist pilgrimage. This is one of the four crucial pilgrimage sites related to the life of Gautama Buddha, the other three being Kushinagar, Lumbini, and Sarnath.
The Bodhi Tree is the sacred tree under which Lord Buddha meditated and attained Nirvana. The leaves of this Bodhi tree are considered as blessings of the lord and pilgrims from all over the world visit this place and carry them as an auspicious gift to absorb the vibe of this holy place. It is said that a sapling of the original Bodhi tree was taken from here to Srilanka and the Bhodi tree is still present there. The tree is situated in Anuradhapura in Srilanka and is believed that a cutting from that tree was planted in Bodh gaya when the original tree died. King Asoka being an ardent devotee of Buddha built this temple in lord’s honor which possesses a huge and beautiful idol of the Lord inside this shrine. Pilgrims customarily tie scarves to its branches, lay cut flowers and small lamps around its base, and burn incense. The Vajrasana also known as the Diamond Throne is the seat of stability which is a stone platform on which Buddha sat and meditated. For Buddhist, this spot is the centre of the universe.
The Summers are hot in Bodh Gaya. One should carry cotton clothes to feel comfortable in hot weather. During the Monsoon season, the whole of North India gets huge rainfall and Bodh Gaya is no exception to it. It is advisable to avoid traveling to these areas during the Monsoon months of the year. Winter months are pleasant in and around Bodh Gaya town. You can visit the holy city anytime between October and March. During this period, the temperature is moderate and inviting.
