It sad to think of such small hands washing their socks and polishing their own shoes, but it is a common feature to see such scenes if we visit a boarding school. Many parents send their children to boarding schools at an early age where they study and live during with their fellow friends and possibly with their teachers or administrators during their education tenure.
The word 'boarding' is used in the sense of "bed and board a facility which lodging and meals. Most schools are day boarding schools where students attend the institution in the day time and return to their families in the evenings. In the boarding schools, the students live in the hostels, and work at their own. They also follow a strict daily routine that has been framed by the school authorities. The students that go back home after school hours are called ‘Day Scholars’ but those that stay back in the school hostel after the school hours are called ‘Boarders’.
The concept of a boarding school is not a new one. It was started about a thousand years ago in the United Kingdom as recorded in the classical literature of the country. The people in UK have made it a practice to send their children to schools so that they can learn to adjust with others. In the early medieval period in Europe, there was a practice of sending boys to the literate clergymen so that they can be taught, mostly in monasteries or in great households. The King’s school, Canterbury is considered as the oldest boarding school and is believed to be founded in the 597 AD.
It is tough for the parents to admit their children into boarding schools because they know that their children will have to do all their work on their own. It is also a fact that boarding schools emphasize on education and the children are well groomed to become mature citizens. There are some advantages that students in boarding schools get. The class size in boarding schools is generally less. As a result, it helps the teachers to engage every student in the classroom. Classrooms in such schools are designed in such a way that it encourages the students to participate actively in the class. Most of the boarding schools are known for their quality of education.
These schools are also rich in providing resources to the students such as library, athletic complexes and theater facilities. Since, the students keep in contact with the teachers all the time, it helps them to clear any of their conception in which they are confused. Completing the school education in boarding schools is good from every aspect because it makes the children become self-dependent, and helps them to face any circumstance in their future. People should be accustomed with the situation which they may face at any moment in their life. Since, students live the major part of their school life in boarding school with teachers; therefore they stay under the continuous watch of their faculty members. This makes them do any of their work with full dedication and in fact, in a more disciplined manner.
