The city of Bikaner was founded in 1488 from Jangaldesh or the country of wild bushes. It has been almost 550 years since its inception and the city has spread across the desert and has also acquired expertise viz, camel breeding and dry irrigation which is unique to it. Bikaner city alongwith its rocky scrubland, is located on an elevated plain in the desert. Several of Bikaner's rulers even commanded the Mughal armies, combating with great chivalry from Gujarat in the west to the Deccan in the south. One such great ruler, Raja Prithviraj Singh, a poet and a warrior, in fact became one of the "Navaratna" (Nine Gems) of Akbar's court. Maharajah Ganga Singh, came to be known as one of India's principal rulers and statesman. His 'shikar' diplomacy, won him many credits - the chance to build his own railway and start the ambitious Ganga Canal, that later changed the outlook of the parched desert landscape. The desert land has a treasure of great monuments like forts, palaces and Havelis and this treasure always attract the tourist toward the majestic land, Bikaner. The desert city Bikaner is famous for his high breed camels, hence it known as the Camel Country. Being near to Delhi, it had to withstand the worst of Mughal invasions during earlier times. The camel festival held in the month of January is also an event worth witnessing if one wants to get the actual color of the place. The exotic camel safaris, its gorgeous forts and the worship of thousands of holy rats at Mata Kali temple are some of the most interesting aspects of Bikaner.
Places to see : Bikaner is known for its beautiful palaces and forts. The Junagarh Fort, built during the reign of Raja Rai Singh, is the most famous fort in Bikaner and is a tribute to the Rajput style of architecture.
Lalgarh Palace : It is situated 3 kms north of Bikaner city. Designed by Sir Swinton Jacob, it has beautiful latticework and filigree work in sandstone. The palace is quite entirely imposing with overhanging balconies and delicate latticework. The Lalgarh Palace built by Maharaja Ganga Singh in the memory of his father is an architectural splendour in red sandstone.The gardens with wandering peacocks and blooming bougainvillea welcome the visitors to the palace.
Junagarh Fort : The Karan Mahal was built to commemorate a notable victory over the Mughal Aurangzeb. The Anoop Mahal is famous for it's gold leaf painting. Other palaces worth visiting are the Dungar Niwas, Ganga Nivas, Gaj Mandir, Rang Mahal, Bijai Mahal. Gigantic columns, imposing arches and graceful scenes, minarets and pavilions, in fact, make it worth a repeat visit.
Karni Mata Temple : The huge silver gates to the temple, and the marble carvings were donated by Maharaja Ganga Singh. This 600 year old temple is dedicated to Karni Mata, a famous mystic of her times, believed to be an incarnation of goddess Durga. Legend has it, that she foretold the victory of Rao Bika.

Air: The nearest airport is at Jodhpur, which is located at a distance of 235 km.
Rail: The city is well-connected with Delhi, Jaipur, Jodhpur, Udaipur & all major cities of India.
Road: Regular bus services link Bikaner to Jodhpur, Kolayat, Ajmer and Jaisalmer.
