Best portable media players - Is there life beyond the iPods?
Body:With the popularity of the little media devices from Apple soaring through the roof, the word iPod has become synonymous with the portable media players. Retailers seem to be using it, even when mentioning media players from other brands. “Sandiskka iPod”, “Philips ka iPod” and “Chinese vala iPod” are very commonly heard phrases at some retailers.
However, let us make it plainly clear that only Apple makes iPods! Moving beyond that, we try to bring a list of the best deals you can get on portable media players. Is there really something apart from the iPod?
Transcend MP320 price in India

This is the baby in the T.Sonic media player family, and will playback mp3, wmv and wav audio files. The tiny display allows you to see the information about the track being played etc. This one is a very slim media player, like a bunch of Wrigley’s chewing gum strips! At this price, this may very well be the media player you can buy, on a strict budget.

Slightly more expensive than the Transcend, but has very similar specs. You may like this because of the multiple colour options, which may help match your dress! Check this out if you don’t like the Transcend’s form factor.

Well, we don’t really need to introduce the Nano, do we? The 1.54-inch TFT display is quite good, but the real catch is the extremely tiny form factor. The prices are more than similarly spec-ed media players, but then again, Apple will charge a premium for a premium product feel.

If you want a portable media player that will play back videos, then the iPod Touch is the way to go. The Retina Display makes video viewing an absolute delight. The only issue is that the device is heavily reliant on iTunes, and cannot play back most video formats. Converting them first before syncing is a bit of a pain. However, music playback is a delight. And the additional capability of apps makes this a delight to use. If you don’t have a budget constraint, do check out one of these versions.
