The leaves are thick and fleshy, green to grey-green, with some varieties presenting white flecks on the upper and the lower stem surfaces. The margin of the leaf is rough and has small white teeth. The flowers are produced in summer on a spike up to 90 cm tall, each flower pendulous, with a yellow tubular corolla 2–3 cm long like other Aloe species. Aloe Vera forms arbuscular mycorrhiza, a symbiosis that allows the plant better access to mineral nutrients in the soil.
Aloe Vera is also known as the true or medicinal aloe. It’s a species of juicy plant in the genus Aloe that is believed to have originated in Sudan. It grows in dry climates and is widely distributed in Africa, India, and other arid areas. The species is frequently cited as being used in herbal medicine. Many scientific studies of the use of Aloe Vera have been undertaken. Some of them conflicting too. Despite these limitations, there is some preliminary evidence that Aloe Vera extracts may be useful in the treatment of wound and burn healing, minor skin infections, sebaceous cyst, diabetes, and elevated blood lipids in humans. These positive effects are thought to be due to the presence of compounds such as polysaccharides, mannans, anthraquinones, and lectins.
The plant is known as Quargandal in Pakistan. Because Aloe Vera plants are very succulent and consist of 95% water, they are extremely frost tender. If they are grown outdoors in warm climates, they should be planted in full sun, or light shade. The soil should be moderately fertile and fast draining. Established plants will survive a drought quite well, but for the benefit of the plant, water should be provided.
Aloe Vera is now widely used on face tissues, where it is promoted as a moisturizer and anti-irritant to reduce resistance of the nose of users suffering hay-fever or cold. It has also been suggested that biofuels could be obtained from its seeds. It can also be used to re-twist dreadlocked hair, a preferred agent for vegans and those preferring natural products. It is also used for soothing the skin, and keeping the skin wet to help avoid flaky scalp and skin in harsh and dry weather. Aloe Vera also works as a moisturizer for oily skin. It prevents the oil glands from overproducing oil.
Aloe Vera has been extensively grown as a decorative plant. The class is well-liked with modern gardeners as a putatively medicinal plant and due to its interesting flowers, form, and succulence. This succulence enables the species to survive in areas of low natural rainfall, making it ideal for rockeries and other low-water use gardens.
As to the claims of the medicinal properties of the Aloe plant, in case of burns, an immediate application of fresh gel has relieved much of the pain, and prevented blistering many times.
