Notebooks have really increased in popularity in the last decade. More colleges than ever before are offering ways to plug-in laptops and it is considered acceptable if not encouraged to use it for taking notes and other things. However, the market is so large, it can be really difficult to determine which notebook would be right for you. Below are some ideas on what you should look for.

The Price
I understand that if you are a college student or even if you are not, pricing is still very important to look at. Technology is an odd thing and it seems that there will be a huge jump in price from things released within the last few months to ones that are just slightly older. So, I would encourage you to look at the mid-ranged pricing notebooks. Those will be very close to being just as good as the ones that are much more expensive. The vast majority of them will be able to hold up to most things that you want to do.
The Specifications
The specifications are extremely important. Here is where it can start getting a little bit overwhelming to most consumers who are not familiar with computers. What is a processor? What size of hard drive is actually big? To be completely honest, you will want to do your research. Think of the things that you want to do with your laptop. Will you be playing some of the latest games on it? If not, then you probably have less concern about a video card. However, will you be running heavy duty applications on it? Then you probably still need a pretty good size processor and plenty of RAM. However, if your intentions are to only surf the net and use it for school, then you can probably get by with a middle of the road, lightweight notebook.
My Recommendations
After really reviewing several notebooks on the market, I think that the Samsung NC10 or the ASUS Eee PC 701 are probably the best ones right now. They are extremely affordable and they have good enough specs for most people to do what they want on it. The only thing I would not encourage these laptops for is gaming. They lack a really good video card that is necessary for some of the latest games. However, surfing the net and doing homework is easy on these laptops. As mentioned above, they will not hurt your wallet too much either.
Really, the difference between them is that the ASUS Eee PC 701 is one of the “mini” notebooks. They are extremely small, lightweight, and easy to travel with. They are actually designed for people who intend on carrying them around a lot or bringing them on planes. However, the Samsung NC10 has a little bit better specs, it is also lightweight, but has a 6 cell battery. It is focused on long-lasting use without having to plug it in. So if you are sitting in a classroom for a couple of hours without a way to plug it in, you should still be fine.
