The Bellville washer is a category of specialty heavy duty spring washers utilized in a number of different machines. The washers are designed to provide an outward pressure between two pieces of the machine usually attached to opposite ends of a shaft.
The Belleville washer is also known as the conical spring washer, or disc spring. The design can be used in everything from standard nut and bolt configurations to far more specialized tasks in defense projects.
The Shape
The basic shape of the washer is similar to other washers with a flat round shape and a center hole for the bolt or shaft. The washer is then pressed into a cone shape with the area around the center hole elevated from the edge of the washer. The cone shape acts as a spring when the Bellville washer is compressed. The washers are available in a number of sizes and materials and often come with a strength rating for the spring action.
Use One or More Washers
A single conical spring washer does have some limits. It can absorb energy only until the point where the cone shape is compressed to a flat configuration. The washer can only expand to the point of its original apex with the rated strength of the spring.
Stacking the springs can increase the strength or the amount of movement that the spring allows. By stacking the washers parallel, with the cones all pointing in the same direction, the strength of the washer is increased.
By staking the washers with the upper points of the cones together the amount of movement allowed by the washers is increased. Some designs require the use of several washers in both parallel and point-to-point configurations.
Uses
The Belleville washer can be used in a similar configuration as a standard split or locking washer. The spring action of the washer provides an outward force between the nut and bolt head that helps prevent the nut from turning. This is often supplemented by the use of locking materials that help hold the nut in place.
Other uses include weapons manufacture, such as land mines. The washers serve as the spring that holds the trigger open until it is depressed. When the washers compress to its flat state, the weapon triggers. In this situation the washers serve the purpose of a spring rather than a washer.
Some gun manufacturers use stacked washers as part of the firing mechanism. The cocking action of the gun compresses the washers to a flat position. The stored energy of the compressed washers is held until the trigger is pulled. This releases the spring forcing the firing pin forward to strike the cartridge and fire the gun.
Problems
Heavy duty spring washers such as the Belleville washer do have some limitations. Stacked washers lose some strength because of the friction between washers. The amount of movement available as the cone springs expand is also limited and much less than other types of springs. However, in uses where they fit, the spring washer can be an economical and useful tool.
