Bedwetting means urinating unintentionally while sleeping at night. It is common for infants and children. They usually urinate unintentionally or involuntarily while sleeping. But it is only from the ages of 4 to 5. If the bedwetting continues after 6 years then it is supposed to be considered as a problem. Boys are more prone than girls in bedwetting. Girls start to stay dry at night at the age of 6 but boys start only at the age of 7. Bedwetting is also known as sleep wetting or night soiling or nocturnal enuresis. Bedwetting problem mainly could arise because of a problem in communication between brain and bladder.

Most of the children learn to control their bladder by 10 years of age. Some children do not know how to control their bladder at night. In such situations bedwetting problems arise. The causes of bedwetting are,

* urinary bladder of child is small

* a problem in nerves of bladder

* type-1 diabetes

* stressful events

* family history of bedwetting and

* Infection in the urinary system

For normal children and adults, if bladder gets full, a signal would be transmitted from the bladder to brain. Then the brain causes an alarm to go to the restroom. If there is a problem in the signal transmission from the bladder to the brain then it causes bedwetting. This is because of the immaturity of bladder nerves and some other infections in the nerves.

There are two types of bedwetting; one is primary bedwetting and another one is secondary bedwetting. Bed wetting solutions include both physical and psychological treatments. At home we could take some primary and regular actions like reducing the fluid in-take of children at evening, get the child to use the toilet before going to bed and get them to wake up at night to use the toilet. We may ask the kids to delay their daytime urination; this would help the bladder to hold much more urine at night to stop bedwetting. We could use an alarm device that will make a sound when the kid is wetting the bed. When the alarm arises the kid would wake up from the bed and go to the toilet. We could make the child to get involved in the daily activities like arranging the bed and rearranging the bed when they wet the bed.

If the bedwetting problem could not be cured using basic home based steps then we should consult a doctor. The child specialists would ask some questions like family history in bedwetting, how long the child has been done bedwetting and if there is any problem in the mental health of the child. Then the doctor would start to examine the physical and mental health of the child and take some urine tests for any defect and infection. Based on the test reports the doctor would give further treatments.

To stop bed wetting, sometime children undergo surgery. Surgery would be necessary for some problems related to the nerves in the bladder and kidneys.
