Nothing breaks the routine of a summer in the city like a day spent near water, and it doesn’t matter if you’re close to a lake, river or ocean.
It’s a Saturday morning, you wake up, look out the window and you know it’s going to be one of those perfect summer days. On one hand you could turn up the AC and stay in bed a little while longer, but on the other you know it would be a waste of great weather. On a day off when there is no cloud in the sky and the streets are heated before nine, you should call up some friends, get ready and head to the beach.

Nothing breaks the routine of a summer in the city like a day spent near water, and it doesn’t matter if you’re close to a lake, river or ocean. Either way you’ll cool down, get some sun, spend the time with friends and simply relax. All you need to do is take half an hour to get ready so that you can have a perfect day.

Start off with applying sunscreen so that it has the time to absorb and doesn’t rub off on your clothes. Just put your swimsuit on and by the time you pack, you’ll be ready to put on one of your airy couture dresses. When you pack, make sure you take the sunscreen as you’ll have to reapply several times at the beach, some bug spray if you plan to be coming home late in the evening, a towel, a blanket and a sheet you can put over the blanket to lie down, because otherwise you’ll get hot and sticky from the fuzzy blanket.

You can’t head out to the beach without some food and drinks. Pack them in a portable cooler, so that they are fresh and refreshing all day long. Some grapes, apples and baby carrots will be a great snack along with pretzels and mixed nuts with raisins, and when you’re tired after swimming, peanut butter and jelly or ham and cheese sandwiches on low carb bread will restore your energy levels. When it comes to drinks make sure you have plenty of water, and when you’re low on chilled ones, just add additional bottles to the cooler. Try to avoid sugary sodas, as they will make you more thirsty and tired.

It’s a lot of fun to play at the beach, so pack a ball or a Frisbee to move a little and not sit all day long, look for some travel games you might have for when you’re not feeling like running anymore, and maybe a floating device that you can tie up and lie down in the water on to cool down. It’s also a smart idea to have a pair of rubber shoes you can go in the water in to avoid getting hurt on sharp rocks or shells.

When you have everything packed and your sunscreen is absorbed, put on a dress, flip flops a hat or a scarf on your head and sunglasses, grab your bags and head out for a day of fun in the sun. Just remember to drink a lot of water and protect yourself at all times so that on Sunday you can relax instead of suffering from sun damage.
