The Island of Majorca is also known as Mallorca with a small population of only 581,564. This island is not very big, as it spans only 3,640 square kilometer or 120 km from one end to the other end, which is equivalent to the distance of Cape Formentor lighthouse to Puerto de San Telm.Tourists tend to favor the coastline of the island, without discovering the spectacular mountains and plains of the inland. The island’s capital is Palma which holds an estimated 300,000 residents; that is more than half the total island population. Its coastline stretches for about 15 km, covering towns and cosmopolitan districts, specifically from Palma beach to Cala Mayor.

Main Industry

Tourism is the heartbeat of this island. Since, as early as 1920s, it developed from a small scale of winter tourism to a large scale today, after the Spanish Civil War. Majorca was crowded with aspiring artists, who displayed their skills to carve their names for fame in Pollensa, such as Anglada Camarassa. These aspirants were challenged to design and construct Hotel Formentor in 1929. An Argentinian entrepreneur, named Adan Dihel, suffered much hardship personally to achieve his aspiration in building the grandest hotel on a beach, which is not conducive for relaxation and holidaying.

Nevertheless, the famed Hotel Formentor changed the island’s destiny in the tourism industry, as many other hotels got on the band wagon.Restaurants, pubs, discos, dances, cafes, entertainment outlets and amusement parks sprang up to complement the hotels’ functions and services; thus, fuelling the tourism in Majorca till today.
