If there is one person in whose footsteps you’d like to go, not necessarily in achieving their level of stardom but as far as leading a full and good life, you should take a closer look at different aspects of that person’s life and make appropriate changes in yours.

Everybody has an idol, whether it’s a successful writer, a renowned musician, a movie star, a world class athlete or an amazing chef. When you admire somebody, you want to be like them, and in order to do that, you want to know as much about them as possible. If there is one person in whose footsteps you’d like to go, not necessarily in achieving their level of stardom but as far as leading a full and good life, you should take a closer look at different aspects of that person’s life and make appropriate changes in yours.
Assuming the person you admire is not famous for being famous and a frequent star of celebrity gossip columns, but a person who actually does something for a living, you can start by learning more about their career path, the skills they have and where they learned them. You’ll notice that there are just as many trained in their profession people as those self made, chance, natural talents out there, so that should give you the understanding that you can also achieve more than you have now by discovering what you are good at or by applying yourself to hard studies and practice.
You can admire people for being great at their job, but also for everything they do in their spare time, from auctioning their couture fashion to benefit a charity, to volunteering at an animal shelter, to teaching their craft to others. Let their actions, and not words, be an inspiration for you, because you can help out your community as well, even if you don’t have the same level of financial ability to do so. Giving back your time and skills, whatever they are, is always appreciated and yet another step to becoming like your idol.
A person’s lifestyle is their calling card. Read a biography of your role model, go through magazines featuring articles and interviews, even look through some gossip and paparazzi pictures. There may be some self promotion or malicious attacks in these materials, but the more you read and see, the clearer and more real picture you’ll have, so you’ll find out if it’s genetics or hard workouts that keep somebody slim, if they sacrifice family time to work, if they truly are vegetarian or only say that to keep their image better. And once you find that out, your outlook and the way you copy your star will become more real.
The beauty of having an idol, a role model whose footsteps you’d like to follow in, is that you have a list of dos and don’ts, you have a step by step career path, from education to the latest success, and you have a picture of exactly what kind of person it is. But just because you like somebody and you’d like to be like them, doesn’t mean you have to be an exact copy of your idol. If you like somebody’s style, you can use it as inspiration and not wear the same exact clothes; if you like how somebody took their career from a bottom feeder to a company shark, you can follow a similar path but on a smaller scale; if you admire somebody for helping out others, you can go out and help causes that touch you and not them. At the same time, you just have to remember that you are your own person, you can grow out of infatuation with a star or you can stop liking your idol for one thing but still be inspired for something else they did.
