There are several laws that have been introduced by the government for the benefit of the citizen of the country. However, not all citizens are aware of all the laws. A very important and crucial law that the government introduced is the child labor law. The urge to abolish child labor has led to the formulation of various rules and statutes that have been termed as Child Labor Laws. The United States Department of Labor is trying its best to protect the citizens less than 18 years of age from the rigors of child labor.

The attempt to give these children their due rights had started from 1853 when Caylie Costa had laid the foundation stone of Children’s Aid Society. This foundation tried their best to help the homeless children, who had taken the street as their home. They were sent to the west and were adopted by various families. Some of the capable children were provided with a job so that they could be independent.

Many organizations had come into existence that helped the government to implement the child labor laws. In 1904 the National Child Labor Committee was established. This organization had pledged the abolishment of child labor in the country. It tried to pass a law, but was eventually annulled by the Supreme Court. Two decades later, the Congress had attempted to approve the national child labor law by the government.

The FLSA has made it possible for the victims of child labor to lodge a complaint against any kind of ill-treatment from the employer, or if they witness that the employers is violating the laws. The complaint can be filed with the Wage and Hour Division. The Wage and Hour Division can be contacted by the helpline 1866 4USWAGE.

Employers who are seen to violate the child labor laws have to cough up $11000 for ill treating each child. The employer can, however, lodge an exception so that the case is passed on to the Administrative Law Judge of the Secretary of Law. This is done as an appeal against the penalty. Most of the states of the United States follow the strict rules governing the Child labor laws.

The child labor laws govern the work hours and conditions which the child is subjected to. Generally this law covers the ill-treatment of children less than 16, but the government has enlisted 17 risky and unsuitable jobs for people below 18. Children below 16 can engage in jobs except at a farm, mine or factory. The products manufactured by children cannot be shipped to other states. It is also deemed illegal for the employer to discriminate employees on the basis of retaliation or filing a lawsuit.

Therefore every person has to become aware of the child labor laws and the terms associated with it. This will help them to learn the laws and at the same time not allow children to get ill treatment. Moreover, with the knowledge of this law, the employers would always remain conscious so as to not face any penalty. This would make them more humane.
