It’s also among the most misunderstood parts of a car. To help you over this, here let’s cover the basic engine types available to you, what can be done with them?
EJ18: This type is used in early Imprezas. EJ18 is not a performance engine, but there is a small and dedicated group of EJ18 enthusiasts who are using these inexpensive and widely available engines to great extent.
EJ205: This is the Subaru WRX engine that uses an open-deck design which means it has only two supports on the piston cylinders. It doesn’t include oil squirters, which lubricate the cylinder walls and relies on oil splash as do most engines. The heads of EJ205 are known for their exceptional flow characteristics and solid valve filters. Its cam profile and timing are easily tunable for good performance. Another amazing fact is EJ205 can be pushed to about 300-350 horsepower without modifications.
EJ22: The EJ22 engine comes in several versions. This engine makes approximately 130 to 140 horsepower and generates about 140 ft-lbs of torque. Similar to EJ18, EJ22 are best left in their stock configuration until they can be replaced with a 2.0 or 2.5 liter model.
EJ251: The most common Subaru engine found on the market. It is an open-deck design, SOHC, 4 valve-per cylinder designs. This engine makes 165 horsepower at 5,600 rpm, and 162 foot-pounds of torque at 4,000 rpm.
EJ255: It is delivered with a new EJ25 variation called the EJ255. This is a new DOHC engine with the phase 2 improvements, a semi-closed deck, and it’s built to be turbocharged. You can identify this engine by its black plastic intake manifold. The Subaru WRX engine version retains an unpainted aluminum manifold.
EJ 257: This is a largest displacement version of the EJ207 and the hottest engine Subaru has ever sold. Its active valve control system automatically adjusts the intake valve timing through a range of 35 crankshaft degrees. This keeps the timing of the intake optimized for power and torque at all times.
EZ30/H6: Also known as the H6. It is a 6-cylinder horizontally opposed engine substantially similar to the EJ series in many ways. The DHOC EZ30 is only 20mm longer than the EJ255. To achieve this length, Subaru had to develop a new block and new heads, so the internals of this engine are all new.
