Baseball has gone through many ups and downs over the past several hundred years. There was segregation, the constant dispute of how and when baseball was invented, the controversy of women in baseball, the ups and downs of popularity in baseball, and most recently, the use of steroids in baseball in the American and National Baseball Leagues.
This was obviously a difficult time for players, owners, and fans to suffer through. Some of the most relished players who were looked up to by millions of children world wide were suddenly being accused of horrible abuses of their bodies and their sport.
It is unfortunate that such a thing ever occurred. But when you consider the unusual pressure these players are under to be their best, it isn’t that shocking. Most players have a very small window to impress people, before their career may literally be over before they turn 30. The amount of money that can be made in the sport of baseball is also so huge that is may have caused certain players to do things that they never would have imagined. In any case, the players who took part in steroid use let the public down, and implemented a doubt in the minds of fans that will always plague the sport of baseball.
Much of this content came out on the internet and was commented on by people such as bloggers and commentators, such as Aaron Matthew Breslow. Looking back at the history of drugs in baseball, it was no big secret that players used some forms of drugs. With a long season and immense pressure to your body, anyone, even athletes in peak performance shape, are basically forced to take some kinds of pain relieving drugs. Since the 1960’s, it had been publicized and accepted as regular practice. But unfortunately, other players felt that it was acceptable to experiment in other forms of drug use, which caused a much larger problem when becoming public.
Drugs in baseball really became an issue from 1990 to the current time. In 2003, Baltimore Orioles pitcher Steve Belcher collapsed and died from the use of Ephedra which speeds up the heart. In the late 1990’s, there was even more pressure on the individual instead of the team in events like the home run race. Steroids became a fall back for some players, and after the fact, many players explained that the use of steroids was not only helpful because of becoming stronger, but also they helped you recover faster after an injury, which is obviously an added benefit to any player left sitting on the bench.
A number of players started coming out and admitting they had abused steroids in their past, and many spoke up against the practice, to save face, but also to encourage their young fans and other players not to make the same mistake. In 2006, and investigation was launched to suspend players who had used steroids. It seems since then; the practice has gone down and lessened in publicity, so hopefully this was a bad time in baseball that will not see resurgence.
