Vishvamitra River flows through the city of Baroda. Baroda has a rich historical background. The ardent historian can trace Baroda's history over 2000 years and more. However, the recent threads can be picked up when the Moghul rule over the city came to an end in 1732, when Pilaji brought the Maratha activities in Southern Gujarat to a head and captured it. Except for a short break, Baroda continued to be in the hands of the Gaekwads from 1734 to 1949. And today’s Barodians have quite a full and hectic cultural life throughout the year. The outstanding trait about Baroda’s cultural life is that it is remarkably cosmopolitan. And while there are hundreds of different identities, everyone participates in all activities. So, the culture of the city is not just history or heritage; it is dynamic, ever-changing and alive. In Baroda various large-scale industries such as Gujarat State Fertilisers & Chemicals, Indian Petrochemicals Corporation Limited and Gujarat Alkalies and Chemicals Limited have come up in the vicinity of Gujarat Refinery and all of them are dependent on it for their fuel and feedstock. The city is a mix of many historical sites as well as new industries and IT parks. Baroda is the cultural capital of the state of Gujarat.  Places to see: There are many museums and gardens that are located in the place as well. Some of the important sites are Lal Bag, Sayaji Bag, Sardar Bag, Maharaj Fateh Singh Museum, Baroda Museum and Picture Gallery. Darbar Hall: The Darbar Hall in Laxmi Vilas Palace was the court room of the Gaekwads. Here musicians performed and entertained the royal family. The beautiful jharokhas, the magnificent chandeliers and the intricate work on the glass windows enhance the beauty of the hall. Dabohi: The town of Dabohi is 29 km southeast of Baroda and is known for its 13th-century Hindu military architecture.  Bharuch: It is located on the main railway line between Baroda and Surat city, is famous for its monuments and the River Narmada that flows through it. Sayaji Bagh: The Sayaji Bagh is a big well-laid park and an important tourist attraction. In this park, one can see the Vadodara Museum and Art Gallery, which has a good collection of artifacts, Indian sculptures and ancient manuscripts, Egyptian antiquities, Mughal miniatures and some works of European masters.  How to reach: Air: Baroda airport is 8 km northeast of the railway station and is linked with Delhi, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, and Pune.  Bus: The main bus terminus is called STC bus stop, which is 5 minutes away from the Central Railway station of Vadodara. Rail: One can travel to almost all the parts of India from Vadodara Junction, where there is a Junction of rails from the directions of Ahmedabad, Mumbai and Delhi.
