Everyone in the UK is feeling the consequences of the ongoing financial crisis and during these hard times it helps to know a few tricks so you can stretch that pound further. Some of these guidelines are pure common sense, some need a bit of practice but with a little persistence, you should be on your way to being the budget king or queen.
Timing is Everything
Did you know that there are certain times during the day that supermarkets implement reductions on their prices? If you time your shopping trips to coincide with these schedules, you can save as much as 75 percent on your grocery bills. The reduction schedules vary from store to store but there are certain schedules that are standard across some establishments.
Sainsbury’s for instance starts reducing prices at 10 in the morning, then at 5 in the afternoon and finally at 8 in the evening. It would appear from the patterns that the largest savings can be had when it is nearing closing time. The rule is, the later it gets in the day, the larger the reductions are. Supermarkets typically start at 25 percent off then go from there.
Knowing What’s Always on Sale
A lot of items are actually perpetually on sale perhaps because many establishments have been closing shop. Promotions are also a constant in retail strategies to entice customers to spend their hard earned money.
Loss leaders are a sure bet, even on the high street. Loss leaders are those items that are offered below cost, mostly to get consumers to buy more. You can save potentially a huge amount of money on these items but make sure these are the only things you purchase. Remember that this is a strategy to get you into a store and once you are in a retail establishment, you will be met with many temptations.
Prices for electronic gadgets such as mobile phones also seem to be in constant decline. Manufacturers come up with newer models so fast and before you know it, numerous models have been rendered dated. If you are not one to go by trends and are quite satisfied with a phone that performs well, you can save money on mobile devices.
Wine is also almost always on sale. Be thorough when shopping for these items as quality may be compromised as a consequence of the price reduction. There are many other products that you can get on sale and just a few of these are books, sofas, cars. Sales also depend on season so make sure to check out of season sales for great deals.
Downshifting
Switching brands is a great way to bag a bargain. If it is your habit to spend on premium quality foodstuff, perhaps you can try living on no-name brands some of the time just to cutback a little on your bills. Studies show that downgrading just one level already yields considerable savings. Consider also shopping at cheaper establishments – supermarkets, clothing stores and so on. Outlet stores also offer great bargains and some even have designer brands that you can get for a steal.
