Baldness is a metabolic disorder characterized by falling off of hair or thinning that results in bald patches or total loss of hair. It is more prevalent in males than in females.

Baldness or alopecia is a metabolic disorder characterized by falling off of hair or thinning that results in bald patches or total loss of hair. Baldness is more prevalent in males than in females. Baldness may be of the following types: alopecia areata or sudden loss of hair in patches, alopecia totalis or total loss of hair from scalp, alopecia universalis or hair loss in the scalp and entire body, telogen effluvium or shock induced alopecia, cicatricial or scarring alopecia, traction alopecia or baldness due to forceful pulling of hair, male pattern baldness or androgenic alopecia and female pattern baldness. Baldness disrupts the normal hair growing and resting cycles, as a result of which the hairs lost during the telogen or resting phase are not replaced timely. The causes of baldness may be listed as follows:
1. Lack of Vitamin B6 and Folic acid in diet and other nutritional deficiencies.
2. Stress, anxiety and sudden shock
3. Heredity
4. Unclean scalp
5. Fungal infection of scalp
6. Poor blood circulation
7. Prolonged illness like typhoid, influenza, anemia, chronic cold, high fever, syphilis etc.
8. Burns or injury to scalp
9. Chemotherapy, x-rays and other medication
10. Thyroid disease
11. Hormonal imbalances
12. Falling estrogen levels after pregnancy
13. Fertility stimulating drugs
14. Auto-immunity
15. Tricotillomania or hair pulling habit
16. Excessive pressure on hair roots due to extremely tight hair styles.
Home Remedies for Baldness
1. Boil a cup of mustard oil with 4-5 heena or mehendi leaves in it, filter and use it for massaging on bald areas. This is a useful home remedy for baldness.
2. Rub onion on bald patches followed by an application of honey. This cures baldness.
3. Apply a scalp mask prepared by mixing 5 tablespoon curd, 1 tablespoon lemon juice, and 1 tablespoon raw gram powder. Keep for an hour and wash off. This effectively treats baldness.
4. Rub scalp vigorously using fingers after washing with cold water. This improves blood circulation and stimulates hair growth.
5. Massage scalp with a mixture of egg yolk and honey, leave for half an hour and wash off. This cures baldness.
6. A paste made by mixing grinded fenugreek seeds and water may be applied on scalp, kept for 40 minutes before washing off. This helps to cure baldness.
7. Use a home hair tonic consisting of equal quantities of fresh lime juice and Indian gooseberry juice. This prevents balding.
8. Apply a mixture of coconut oil and lime water daily to get rid of baldness.
9. Application of coconut milk on scalp is highly beneficial in treating baldness.
10. Application of the juice of coriander leaves all over scalp arrests hair loss and baldness.
11. Massaging scalp with castor oil is an effective baldness cure.
12. Apply a paste made out of grinded lemon seeds and black pepper on bald patches. This induces hair growth.
