When Bajaj announced it would stick to Discover and Pulsar brands, everyone was little amazed. Read the test drive to know about various characteristics of Discover 150cc.
When Bajaj announced it would stick to Discover and Pulsar brands, everyone was little amazed. But with the stupendous success of Pulsar 135LS and Discover 100cc, Bajaj has reiterated its dominance in the Indian two wheeler market. Now, Bajaj has added another variant of its Discover brand called – Discover 150cc. If’ i’m right, this is fourth avatar of Discover after Discover 125cc, Discover 112cc and Discover 135cc. For me, the jadoo bike never gets bored. Discover 150cc retains the same styling of it siblings. The broad front fairing which houses headlamp and pilot lamps. Mounted on the fairing is the cat shaped tinted visor. The low slung styling which has now become uncommon might attract few pedestrians. The three stepped LED dominates the rear.

Sadly, Discover 150cc has nothing to distinguish from Discover 100cc except for the 150cc sticker at the reae cowl. Bajaj has used maximum body parts of Discover 100cc to keep the cost low as possible. Discover 150cc lacks the flair and fashion one would expect from a 150cc class bike (though low cost).

As typical of any Bajaj bike, paint quality is nothing short of perfect. Quality of switches are also good. But the placement of bypass light is a bad idea. The rear view mirrors are also not useful.

Bajaj Discover is powered by an 144.3cc engine pumping out 12.8bhp of peak power at 7500rpm and 12.75Nm of peak torque at 5500rpm. The DTSi engine uses digital twin spark flame to burn the fuel. The all-down shift 5-speed gearbox transmits power to the wheel. Bajaj claims the Discover 150cc to return a mileage of 65kmpl.

Switch on the ignition, Discover 150cc behaves like a typical Bajaj engine. The racy throat of the engine sets in from lower rpms. It starts with a boom and go all the way to 102kmph. Remember, Bajaj Discover weighs just 121kg and hence higher power to weight ratio. Sadly, the five speed gearbox lacks precise gearshifts and needs constant workout to prevent stalling of the engine. Discover 150cc returned a mileage of 55kmpl in our test drive.

The low slung styling ensures commuter-ish ride. The flat seats and taller handlebar ensures comfortable ergonomics. Discover 150cc comes with Nitrox suspension at the rear and telescopic suspension at the front. The ride quality is good and vibes are minimal.

The front disc brake and rear drum brake offers a progressive and confidence inspiring bite. Straight-line stability is not upto the segment standard. The blame goes to poor rubbers – 2.75 at the front 100/90 at the rear. Cross wind or a pot-hole may unsettle the bike at higher speeds. . However the slick design and powerful engine makes a good recipe for zig-zag in the trafiic signals.

Bajaj Discover 150cc comes with electric start, 17″ alloy wheels, pilot lamps, disc brake and LED tail lamp.

On the road, Bajaj Discover 150cc costs Rs53,554 (Chennai). Discover 150cc is available in Black Blue, Black Red and Black Green.

Bajaj Discover 150cc is aimed directly at buyers who wants more bike for less money. When even a 100cc or 110cc bike costs Rs50,000+, Bajaj has made a wonder through the brilliant pricing of Discover 150cc. Clearly, it is not a cheap chinese bike or a poor product. Other manufacturers should learn a point or two from Bajaj on frugal manufacturing. But, we believe that price alone won’t make a bike successful especially in the prestige conscious 150cc segment. We wish Discover 150cc to have something to boast about other than the price.

Every now and then, Bajaj is phasing out few bikes and introduce many. This strategy pays well for Bajaj. But even some Bajaj dealers are confused, when you ask a particular model is available or not. This strategy also takes a toll on second hand value of the bike.
